Solid design

The tablet has a nice weight to it and the rubberized back helps it feel good in hand for prolonged periods of time

Awkward Screen

The 1,024 x 600 resolution means that in portrait mode icons and words often look squashed up together, making them rather unsightly

Android 4.1

If you're looking for a relatively cheap way to get your hands on Android 4.1, this seven-incher comes with it pre-installed

Can BWC's budget seven-inch offering challenge the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD?

The budget tablet market is awash with devices vying for your attention, and the latest to enter the fray is from BWC. At seven inches, the tablets utilizes the standard black slab look, but with a wide bezel encompassing the slightly odd 1,024 x 600 resolution screen. There’s no major design inclusions to note, but the rubberized back of the device feels great in hand, and as a whole the tablet feels well put together. All the usual ports and rockers are included, as well as a micro SD card slot, 0.3-MP front-facing camera and a full HDMI port which is a nice touch.

Turning on the device reveals the full Android 4.1 experience and all the features it brings with it. The dual-core processor does a good job of making the tablet feel nippy and this is also helped with the lack of bloatware included on the tablet. We did like the included Apk installer app that can be used to install apps from your SD card, which was a great addition and something you don’t often see on devices this cheap.

Despite handling most tasks well, the screen is below par when compared to the competition. The 1,024 x 600 resolution leaves most app icons and words squashed up which looks ugly and webpage browsing can be a problem when in portrait mode. It also leaves a pretty wide bezel around the screen that loves to embrace fingerprints.

The BWC 7 Inch HD Android Tablet doesn’t do anything that is truly amazing, but it doesn’t do anything wrong either. In fact it falls slap bang in the middle of what you could want from a budget tablet. If you can look past the dodgy screen resolution, then this offering from BWC might just be a suitable choice for you if you’re in the market for a sub-$100 tablet.
