Smarter, Sharper and Snappier : Samsung NX200

The NX200 takes a working formula and ups the ante

They've taken their time, but Samsung is certainly fine-tuning their compact system cameras into something that stands on its own. The NX100 was, quite rightly so, THAT camera; the one that had our attention. The NX200 is that successor with big shoes to fill -- and it's fills it up very nicely.

The camera's design is slightly compacter than the NX100, and it eschews from its predecessor's more fashionable approach by being simpler and more straight-forward. The effect is much more straight-cut and rigid, perhaps a little boring, but aesthetics is less of your concern here.

Description: Samsung NX200

We find it to have a comfortable, firmer grip, with better weight balance. We consider the overall design to be pretty good. You get the function wheel, settings dial and shutter release placed in a holy trinity at the top, while the back houses the very nice 3-inch AMOLED display and the remaining buttons. Everything can be reached easily, and made perfectly for single-handed usage.

You'll also find the i-Function system on the lens, first introduced on NX100. This neat feature essentially made the NX100 as such a memorable camera, and the NX200's upgraded version only makes it much more welcoming.

We took the NX200 on a hike around town and came back suitably impressed. The picture quality here is great, aided greatly by its very impressive 20.3-megapixels CMOS sensor. The images are sharp, crisp, and has some very good colour reproduction. We're also impressed with its ISO performance, which manages to keeps the noise level suitably low. Throw in a snappy auto-AF and you get a camera that performs well on every level.

A few notable flaws, though; the white balance on the camera gets a little inaccurate sometimes. There's also no EVF option here, meaning that you'll be stuck with the back-panel screen. That aside, you can be glad to know that the camera takes 1080p video, and supports the whole range of art filters and fun settings that you can enjoy.
