The colors are wonderful with good saturation. You can change the sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tones via the image options. Shooting with flash produces good quality shots with very few red-eye effects in portraits.

Lens performance

The exposure is reliable. Dynamic range is also good and is expandable in many ways, including “Auto lightning optimized” or the HDR mode which provides image combinations, although the best result would be produced when shooting on a tripod.

Macro shooting performs impressively for a kit lens, with the lens focusing on the 25cm-away subjects. A good result is achieved when using the full telephoto zoom, although for better results, a macro lens is obviously recommended.

Detail levels are good when using either the lens at the wide or telephoto end. Vignette is noticeable in shots (much more at the wide-angle end), although it is somehow reduced as the built-in correction fulfill its job. The purple fringing and chromatic aberration are low, although they are still visible if the images are viewed at their full sizes, but the camera will fix these problems in the camera itself.

ISO noise level

As expected, ISO 100 produces very smooth result, with very low noise level. The result of ISO800 is good although slight grain is visible. At ISO1600, the noise level becomes more noticeable. The slight loss of color are recorded as the noise increases at ISO3200, and the noise gets even worse with more noticeable color loss at ISO6400.

Results of the 700D are better than that of 650D at ISO3200, 6400 and above, although the difference is quite clear. Above this level, at ISO12800, the noise rises again, but the picture is still usable with further processing as the detail is still acceptable. Just as expected, the ISO25600 witnesses the highest noise level, and as there are many lost details, this setting should better be avoided.

White balance

The Auto White Balance performs quite well under tungsten light with slightly warm result. Using the tungsten preset mode would produce the similar performance. AWB performs even better under fluorescent light as the colors are much more neutral and the same result would be produced when using the preset fluorescent.

Digital filters

You can choose different effects as shown in the picture above, as well as set the background blur easily in the Creative Auto section. However, these effects are not fully available when shooting RAW images, with additional creative filters in JPEG or playback, including Grainy black and white, Soft focus, Fish-eye effect, Art bold effect, Water painting, Toy camera and Miniature. Now, it is possible to view the effect before you start shooting, as well as modify the strength of the effect when using the live view mode.

Video

Video’s quality is good, as they are recorded at full HD at 25 or 24fps with adjustable microphone as well as wind filter/ attenuator options or the option to enable/ disable sound recording. Recording at ISO12800 is possible with stereo sound. Like with the live view focus test, the camera can be slowed down when focusing during video recording process to lock the focus although with the STM lens, there is almost no sound recorded from the focus motor.
