5.2. Using Captions
You can also optionally create a unique caption
for each of your pictures if you'd like. These captions are simply
descriptive text labels, so you can be creative and even verbose.
(Descriptive tags, by comparison, are typically short words or
phrases.) You might add text such as "Doesn't Kelly look surprised
here?" or "Bob finally made it to the top of the mountain!" It's up to
you.
NOTE
Captions are limited to 255 characters, so you technically can't add any text you like.
To add a caption to a picture or group of pictures,
select one or more pictures and then click the Add caption link in the
Info pane under the Caption heading. Add any text you like.
You can also add captions to individual photos if
you've set Photo Gallery to display in Details view. In this case, you
can simply click the Add caption link you will see next to the photo,
as shown in Figure 19.
5.3. Using Ratings
Another way to filter your images is to apply ratings
to your pictures, on a scale from one to five stars. Pictures you
really like could receive a five-star rating, whereas the duds might
get one star. You can provide ratings via the Info pane or using two
different thumbnail view styles.
To rate a picture via the Info pane, select the
image you'd like to rate. Then, look for the Rating link and stars in
the Information section of the Info pane. To give a picture a four-star
rating, for example, click the fourth star, as shown in Figure 20.
You can also apply ratings directly to thumbnails if
you configure Photo Gallery to display in Thumbnails with rating or
Details view. In these cases, the ratings stars will appear below, or
right next to, each image thumbnail.
As you should expect by now, you can select multiple
images and apply ratings to all of them simultaneously. To remove
ratings, right-click one or more rated images and choose Clear rating
from the pop-up menu that appears.
NOTE
Thanks to improvements to Windows
Explorer in Windows 7, you can also add or edit metadata to photos and
other files directly from the shell. To do so, select one or more image
files in Explorer and then note the Tags, Rating, and Title entries in
the Details pane. (The Title entry is the same as Caption in Photo
Gallery. Ah, the consistency of Microsoft software products.) You can
edit these items directly from this location if you'd like.
