One of the Better Typing Experiences Around
Logitech’s
line of Ultrathin Keyboard Cover typing accessories powered by Bluetooth aren’t
new, but they are well-engineered for what they’re made to do, and the keyboard
cover for the iPad Air is no different.
It’s
the sleek and seamless keyboard companion
that loves your iPad almost as much as you do.
On the
outside, we like how the aluminum finish closely mimicked that of the iPad Air,
though just like its predecessors, the case (when snapped closed in place) only
protects your tablet’s screen, leaving the rear bare sans protection. Just like
the cases that came before it, the case uses an iPad Smart Cover-style magnetic
rail to attach to your tablet, with the case held in place with a magnetic seal
when closed.
With
Instant On/Off, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover works just like an Apple
Smart Cover.
Charging the
built-in battery is done via micro-USB port, which sits alongside a power
switch and Bluetooth pairing button. Logitech claims a battery life of three
months when in use; we have to admit that over the past two months of
occasional use, the case has yet to require a recharge.
The
Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover fits your iPad
so seamlessly that you can hardly tell them apart.
Like its
predecessors, a magnetic rail that sits just above the keyboard is where you
rest the iPad. The magnets hold the iPad quite securely in place, but only when
used in landscape mode. You can use the keyboard case with an iPad in portrait
mode, but there’s no magnetic locking to keep the tablet from falling off. Once
the tablet is locked in place, your iPad screen also automatically unlocks.
In actual
use, unlike the case for the iPad Mini, which had a keyboard that was a little
too cramped for comfort, the keyboard for the iPad Air, we feel, is spaced out
just nicely. If you prefer something more spacious and have the larger 9.7-inch
iPad, Logitech also makes a corresponding case. Hardcore keyboard typists will
probably find the delete key a little small for their tastes, while some keys
like the backslash and tilde have been moved around. These changes are quite
minor though, and should be relatively easy to adjust to.
Logitech
has created something unique with this cover. Its use of magnets sets it apart
in a world of folio-style keyboard cases, and makes it the thinnest keyboard
cover available with such comfortable typing.
We do like
this keyboard case very much, but Logitech still doesn’t quite solve the issue
of protection for the rest of your tablet. You can’t use this accessory with
cases installed, and that remains a serious knock against what is arguably one
of the better tablet keyboard solutions that you can buy.
