The pictures reproduce the excellent colors and are well exposed. The landscape photos have great blues and greens. The portraits have quite good skin tones, but slightly red eyes when using the flash.

Macro | 1/30 sec | f/3.0 | 4.3 mm | ISO 80

The photos have a good amount of detail throughout at both ends of the lens, with purple fringing that does not seem to occur. When using the Clear Image Zoom, it is clear that the image quality is reduced, but you would not notice if you shared the photos on the web. The lens has a minimum focusing distance only about 1 cm, which allows you to shoot excellent close-up images.

ISO test images

Low noise at ISO 80, 100 and 200

Low noise at ISO 80, 100 and 200

Low noise was at ISO 80, 100 and 200. There was a little fuzzy in places at ISO 400 and fuzzier at ISO 800. The images at ISO 1600 showed that there was a loss of detail with fuzzy white noise effect at ISO 800. The white noise is more serious at ISO 6,400, with that the quality of images is OK to use on the web.

Under the incandescent lights, the AWB has orange tones in the photos; the incandescent preset performs well. Under the fluorescent lights, the AWB also performs well; the Fluorescent preset has a slight manifestation of scarlet-colored tones.

Value

The Canon IXUS 255 HS is priced at $301. Other cameras with 10x optical zoom consist of the Olympus VR-340 at $120, Fujifilm FinePix T500 at $150 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-SZ9 at $256 and the Sony Cybershot DSC-WX200 at $248. If you are particularly interested in a camera with Wi-Fi, there are plenty of options such as the Nikon Coolpix S95000 that costs $376; the Sony Cybershot DSC-WX300 costs $406 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 costs $451.

You should also need to buy a memory card and a case or bag to keep the camera safe and protected – take a look at our complete guide to camera bags.

Conclusion

For a camera with built-in Wi-Fi and 10x optical zoom, the Canon IXUS 255 HS shows good value for money. The image and video recording quality is also great, despite shooting close-up macros or distant objects. You had better avoid shooting with ISO 1,600 or upwards since it gives poor image quality, and we do not have a strong impression on portrait images, especially it is due to the fact that there is red-eye when shooting with flash. Battery life is also rather low; therefore, you might want to carry a spare battery. The Canon IXUS 255 HS is not a particularly unique camera, but it will be commensurate with the price paid.
