The camera creates images with bright-colored saturation, and some will say “rich”, reliable colors and exposure. Light-sensitive range can be expanded by the light-sensitive range option (up to 400% at max res), or EXR DR mode (up to 1600%) though the EXR DR mode reduces the resolution down to 8 megapixel. Red-eye is little at portrait with flash

The purple border is unnoticeable in the tree shot above, which is impressive for an ultra-zoom zoom camera, though some is realizable at the edge in other images and when using optical zoom. Some chromatic aberration is noticeable in high-contrast zone. Image distortion and pincushion distortion are low in general, though the pattern is more noticeable when using much zoom.

Details are reasonable for a 16 megapixel camera, though sometimes the images may seem to be over-processed, and the images turn more washed-out when using much zoom for telephoto. Close-up focusing option lets you focus on the subject 5 cm away from the camera according to the technical specs, though it seems like 1.5cm from the front of the camera, giving good close-up performance.

ISO

ISO 100 and ISO200 shots show low noise, with noise becoming noticeable at ISO400. At ISO800 noise becomes more serious, and at ISO1600 details become weak due to the increase of noise. When reaching ISO3200, it’s best for you to set up EXR High ISO & Low Noise to have better result at resolution lowering down to 8 megapixels. At ISO6400, the camera automatically reduces the size of the image to 8 megapixels, and then at ISO12800 the image size once again reduces to 4 megapixels.

White balance

Auto White Balance (AWB) delivers warm result under incandescent light, and using the pre-sets will result in more neuter result. AWB performs well under fluorescent light, with preset giving a color range.

The images have different panoramic modes, from 120, 180 to 360 degree, you simply need to press the panoramic button and pan the camera from one angle to another angle.

Digital filter

Captured images with different filters

There’re lots of scene modes and filter, as well as lots of exposures. Some can be seen above. In addition to that is the movie reproduction mode which includes:  Standard, Velvia, Soft/Astia, black white and sepia.

The camera record full HD films at 60 fps, with stereo sound and optical zoom. There’re lots of high speed video modes available at reduced res, including 120fps VGA, 240fps recording at 320x240, and 480fps recording at 320x112 pixels. Focusing is very slow when using video, especially if you use optical zoom when recording. Image stabilization also has to struggle to keep the video stable, especially when using lots of zoom.

Price

Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR has the price of $423, making it more expensive than many rivals, though we expect that the price will reduce over time. there’re lots of available travel zoom cameras:

·         Fujifilm FinePix F770EXR, 20x, GPS, $276

·         Fujifilm FinePix F800EXR, 20x, Wi-Fi, $362

·         Nikon Coolpix S9500, 22x, Wi-Fi, GPS, $370

·         Panasonic Lumix TZ40, 20x, Wi-Fi, GPS, $370

·         Canon Powershot SX280 HS, 20x, Wi-Fi, GPS, $386

·         Sony Cyber-shot HX50, 30x, Wi-Fi, $507

Conclusion

How can this product compare to other rivals on the market? Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR updates F800EXR with a new sensor with built-in phase focus, producing incredibly fast focus speed and shutter response. The camera has built-in Wi-Fi for easily switching to the phone, or alternative backup for PC. With Fujifilm EXR sensor you have the benefit of the expanded light-sensitive range, despite at res lowering down to 8 megapixels, though we feel that this compromise is worth it. specifically, F900 provides images with strongly bright colors, and good detail level. Video performance is disappointed, and if you insist on using the camera for video, it may be not the one. In general, thanks to the rich of features, high speed performance and good-image quality, Fujifilm FinePix F900EXR deserves a recommendation.
