At both ends of the lens, the images carry a great deal of details and well-controlled purple fringing, although pincushion distortion is still visible in some pictures. The lens has the minimum focal length of 5cm, letting you get close enough to shoot wonderful macro photos.

ISO performance

Sample photos with different ISO levels

Sample photos with different ISO levels

The distortion is low at ISO 80, 100. Images are getting softer when ISO is at 200. The distortion slightly increases at ISO 400 and once again at ISO 800, but image quality is not much affected. When ISO reaches 1600, many details are lost, especially those at the corners of some of the squares in our test. The distortion increases at ISO3200, but the image’s size is restricted to just 4 megapixel.

White balance

The auto white balance performs very well under incandescent light, and preset tungsten mode provides lively images. Under fluorescent light, the same good performance of the AWB is recorded, and the preset fluorescent mode gives photos with a magenta cast.

Digital filters

S3500 owns a great number of filters which helps producing creative shots. Some examples are given above.

Value

The Nikon Coolpix S3500 is now available for $132. There are many other economical cameras, most of which tend to restrict the zoom to 5x, including Fujifilm FinePix AX650, available for $75, Olympus VG-180 which costs $104, Canon Powershot A1300 whose price is $86, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS50, available for $111, Samsung ST72, which costs $128 and Sony Cybershot DSC-W710, available for $117. There are also some products which feature the zoom of 8x and affordable price, like Canon IXUS 132 which costs $143 and Sony Cybershot DSC-WX60 available for $194.

You would also need to purchase a memory card and a case or bag in order to keep our camera safe and protected – visit our instruction for camera’s bag and case.

Conclusion

If a low-price camera is what you are looking for, you would never find any better camera than this Nikon Coolpix S3500, especially among those whose zoom is restricted to 5x.
