Operating range is good, the new lens is
capable of providing detailed images at both wide and mobile shooting ends of
the lens. Purple border is visible in contrast zone, especially for the lens.
Lens aberration adjustment can be turned on, with options for peripheral
illumination (pattern), as well as chromatic aberration. In our testing images,
we set the chromatic aberration adjustment off to see the results from the lens
without editing.
Close-up performance is impressive for a
kit lens, with the lens focusing on the object 25cm away from the camera, and
the good results are possible when using max distance shooting zoom, though to
have batter result, a macro lens is still recommended. There’s mild image
distortion at the wide end of the lens and some pincushion-shape distortion at
the distance shooting end, though they’re not too clear in the images.
ISO

Samples
with different ISO
ISO range is from ISO100 to ISO12800, with ISO25600
/ H available if activated in customized menu. The result of ISO 100, as
expected, is very smooth, with low noise. ISO800 is good enough though the
grains start to slightly appear. ISO 1600 is when the noise becomes clearer. At
ISO3200 noise increases with a soft loss of colors. ISO6400 noise becomes more
overwhelming with lots of lost colors. There’re visible hot pixels at ISO12800 and
ISO25600, and as these ISOs perform highest noise level, they should be avoided
to have the best result.

Under
fluorescent light
Auto White Balance (AWB) produces a little
ward result under tungsten light, with Tungsten presets delivers the same
result. AWB performs well under fluorescent light, with fluorescent presets
giving almost identical result.
Digital
filter
There’re
lots of creative effect as well as colors options
100D has lots of creative effects as well
as colors options. Based on the mode that you change the recorded file, with “creative
filter” mode saving both unsaved version as well as an alternative version of
the image – both are saved as JPEG file. Color options can be customized, where
you can set up sharpness, contrast, saturation and color tones.
Scene
mode
Images
with different scene modes
There’re lots of ways to increase the
recorded operating range, by using backlit HDR scene
mode, using Auto Lighting Optimizer (ALO) option, or the outstanding tone
priority option in retouching menu. Using Auto Lighting Optimizer can make the
green in the landscape images look pretty bright or glowing, so it’s worth
using a lower setting at that time, or turning it off. The camera doesn’t have
panoramic shooting feature.
Film is recorded 1,920x1,080
at 25 or 24fps, 720p at 50fps, and 640x480 at 25fps. sound option consists of
manual level setting, as well as option to disable sound recording. There’s
also wind filter and attenuator filter. The camera records mono sound, with a micro
jack providing for those who require stereo sound.
Value
Canon EOS 100D has the price of $719of body
only, or $878 with kit lens, much more expensive than Sony Alpha A58 (20mp, $599),
Nikon D3200 (24mp, $578), Nikon D5200 (24mp, $824), and Pentax K-30 (16mp, weatherproof
sleeve, $749). Having not much more money, 700D has $824 body, $929 with lens,
or much cheaper is Canon EOS 600D pricing at about $615 with kit lens.
The alternatives is a lot in mirror less
camera range, which is worth considering if small size is priority, including Sony
NEX-3N / NEX-5R, Panasonic Lumix GF6 / G6, Olympus PEN Lite E-PL5 / E-PM2, and Samsung
NX300 as some examples.
You also need to buy a memory card and the
sleeve or bag to keep your camera safe and protected – take a look through our
full instruction about camera bag.
Conclusion
Canon EOS 100D is the smallest DSLR having
optical viewfinder, and is the answer of Canon for a mirrorless DSLR style
camera, having almost similar size to Micro Four Thirds Panasonic Lumix G6, as
well as having almost the same price, though G6 has rotating screen, is faster
in continuous shooting and have more advanced features which are integrated (including
Wi-Fi). Besides, the Micro Four Thirds lens is normally smaller than Canon EOS
lens. And herein puts a quandary with Canon EOS 100D, while the body is much
more compact, the lens is still larger and the new 18-55mm IS STM is actually
larger than the lens it replaces. In addition to that, the extremely
competitive price of the latest mirror less camera, you will have to think
about who’s going to buy this new camera.
If you invest in the Canon lens, and want
the possibly smallest body, and love the optical viewfinder, Canon EOS 100D provides
excellent images which are well structured with good processing, despite the
small size. To many, having an actually smallest DSLR can seduce them, and Canon
EOS 100D of course won’t be disappointed, though it has some negative points
due to the small size, which specifically are short battery life, slower
continuous shooting (than 650D/700D), and slightly fewer functional keys. We
will also recommend you trying this camera, as you may love a larger camera, if
you have bigger hands.
