OKI MB461 Monochrome MFP - As Clear As Black And White

This monochrome speed demon prints as fast as you can blink

If you're big on printers, OKI is probably a name that you'd definitely associate with big printers that are meant for office use. Known mostly for their superbly reliable monochrome printers, we're here to take a look at yet another offering in their burgeoning stable of monochrome Multifunction Printers, the MB461.

The MB461 is a triple function MFP. Besides printing, it also does copying and scanning, with only the latter being in colour. Depending on your strength, you may need more than one pair of hands to carry this hefty beast out of the box and onto the table, as it is quite a big and heavy printer.

Setup and driver installs are fairly straight forward, and made easier by the on-screen instructions provided by the driver CD. You can choose to install the driver over USB or the network (yes, this is a networked printer, but cable only). This is great as you would only need one printer in the office, and it can be shared by a small number of users!

The MB461 also has a Recirculating Automatic Document Feeder (RADF) that is capable of duplex printing without having to manually turn the pages over after one side is done printing. On the downside, however the document feeder is only capable of holding up to 50 pieces of 80gsm A4 papers. Not really ideal for large-quantity printing.

Where print speed and quality is concerned, the MB461 utilises its very own LED print technology, which more or less combines the crisp printouts the best of speed with the best in print quality. With a print speed of 33ppm, it also has a sleep-to-first-page time of 25 seconds, but from our experience with the MB461, it takes less time than that to start printing from sleep.

As far as scanning and copying are concerned, the MB461 is great at both. Scans come out mostly clean on the computer, and copies are near identical to actual printouts, especially when copying documents.
