The Toshiba Oosmio X870-11Q is a 17.3in
desktop-replacement laptop with an impressive roster of hardware. A Core
i7-3610QM processor is clocked at 2.3GHz, and capable of 3.3GHz with Turbo
Boost.
There's also a whopping 16GB of 1,600MHz
RAM, 3D technology and two storage drives - a 128GB SanDisk SSD and a 1TB HDD.
The specification sets a great standard,
but it’s one to which the Qosmio's build quality simply can’t live up. The
Toshiba’s all-plastic shell is somewhat graceless, prone to fingerprints and
victim to a flimsy screen and weak trim.
This monster laptop measures 44 mm thick
and weighs more than 3.4kg. Its matt black finish is embossed with a
diamond-patterned texture for grip. This looks okay... until you spot the dodgy
tinsel side trim, which has all the bling of a crimson Christmas-tree bauble.
A wide backlit keyboard has a separate
numberpad, and is joined by a large off-centre trackpad and what Toshiba calls
"2x2 Harman Kardon speakers" - that is, two drivers on each side.
We found the Scrabble-style keys easy to
use, but the trackpad veers between unresponsive and erratic. Two-finger
scrolling was smooth and you can use pinch-to-zoom gestures.
Thanks to the allied strengths of Intel,
nVidia and SSD storage, the Oosmio scored very well in our lab tests. It failed
to complete one sub-test in World Bench 6, but we estimate it would achieve 170
points, putting it right up there with the Alienware and MacBook Pro. The GTX
670M with 3GB VRAM managed a cool 205fps in Fear, and an impressive 76fps in
Crysis at its native resolution (Medium).
A headline feature is the 17.3in full-HD
glossy screen with active-shutter 3D technology. We liked the 3D effect, but
the supplied nVidia glasses look like welding goggles.
Other features include a Blu-ray rewritable
drive, four USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI connection and a 3D webcam.
Toshiba touts a battery life of only 2
hours from the undersized 47Wh battery. We recorded a marginally longer 2 hours
14 mins.
Verdict: The
Toshiba Oosmio X870-11Q has an impressive specification and offers excellent
performance. Blu-ray and 3D playback are unique in this round-up. But the build
quality really lets down this laptop.
