The Print Speed Debate
You may have noticed when checking out the
printing speeds that two standards are mentioned: PPM and IPM. Before 2009, a
printer’s speed was measured in PPM (pages per minute). However, each
manufacturer has its own method of conducting PPM speed measurements, so while
Brand A’s printer may boast a higher PPM rating compared to Brand B, it may not
mean it’s actually faster. In 2009, an ISP-standardized method was introduced,
where speed is calculated based on the default settings of the printer and
using standardized documents and procedures. IPM (image per minute) was the new
unit of measurement for this method. Of course, as there’s no way of converting
IPM to PPM or vice-versa, comparisons are pretty much impossible when comparing
specifications at face value.
The best Inkjet all-in-One is…
Epson workforce pro WP-4521
When it came to printing documents, whether
monochrome or color, the WP-4521 raced past the rest in terms of speed, and was
consistently among the top two performers in terms of quality. Likewise, it
performed pretty well in copying documents too. While photo print quality may
not be the best, it still managed to produce the most balanced images. The
printer does lack built-in Wi-Fi, as well as media card slots, but if raw
performance is your thing, Espon definitely has it in spades.

Canon Pixma MX897
If print speed isn’t the most important
check mark on your list the Canon PIXMA MX897 provides excellent value for its
feature set. There’s a PictBridge port and CompactFlash card reader for
printing right from your camera. Built-in wireless makes it convenient to print
with Apple’s AirPrint and Google Cloud Print. Photo print quality is also
superb with vibrant colors. And while not the cheapest of the lot, its
combination of performance features make it the choice with unbeatable bang for
the buck.

The Brother MFC-J825DW
The Brother MFC-J825DW has built-in Wi-Fi
to allow for easy sharing of the printer in an office or home, plus the
built-in ADF and duplexer make it really convenient for printing and copying
documents. However, it’s let down by slow printing speeds and average print
quality. But if you can look past the flaws, this is definitely an affordable
AIO that’s worth taking a second look at.

HP Officejet 6700 Premium
We have mixed feelings about the HP
Officejet 6700 Premium. While it performed well in the print speed and quality
tests, its copy speed leaves more to be desired. Document print quality is
generally good, but somehow it falters in the photo print test. So while it’s
good for printing documents, its photo and image printing performance are its
biggest weaknesses.
