An inkjet all-in-one aimed at keen
photographers
The Expression Photo XP-750 is an inkjet
multifunction printer designed for people who want to print, scan and copy
photos, and has impressive specifications to match. There’s a high-resolution
scanner for capturing finer details of photographs, and support for printing
directly from memory cards, including the widely used SD type. The scanner
doesn’t have a backlight though, so it can’t be used to digitize old slides and
negatives.

The XP-750’s most important feature, however,
is the printer itself, which supports high resolutions and uses small droplets
of ink – each forms a miniscule dot on the page, making it impossible to spot
grain with the naked eye. The printer uses six inks rather than the more common
four or five, with extra-light magenta and cyan colors that reduce grain and
improve shading in light regions of photos.

The XP-750’s specialty isn’t everyday
plain-paper printing, but it did better in our tests than similar Epsons we’ve
reviewed. It’s not especially fast at printing documents, delivering black text
at only 6.8 pages per minute (ppm), but the results were sharp so the
occasional letter will look good. Color documents on plain paper were rather
impressive and not much slower, shooting out at 6.1ppm, which is fast for an
inkjet.

When it comes to printing photos, however,

prints in 85 seconds each. On color or black-and-white shots the results were superb,
with sharp, faithful colors in both dark and light regions, reproducing very
accurate detail from the original image. Black-and-white shots printed onto
Epson’s Premium Glossy paper had a mild magenta tint straight after printing,
but once dry they were neutral and detailed, with a lovely gloss finish.
While Epson’s scan interface has an
automatic mode for novices, experienced users should opt for the excellent
Professional mode, which gives full control. It’s blisteringly fast, completing
a low-resolution A4 scan in just 11 seconds and taking only 21 seconds to scan
a photo at 600dpi, even when connected over Wi-Fi. Again, the results were
great.

multifunction printer is stull expensive to run, but not unreasonably so
The XP-750 is a little more expensive than
competitors, such as Canon’s Pixma MG6350. However, at about 9.5p per page of
mixed text and graphics, its running costs are competitive.
