Performance and battery life
Regardless of the Lumia 822’s orientating
as a mid-range device, it runs similarly to high-end phone series such as the
Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X. Since all phones in the Windows Phone 8 roster
currently consist of Snapdragon S4 from Qualcomm, you will be unable to realize
much difference in this section. On the positive side, you will not need to
spend much more money to get a faster device.
The
Lumia 822 offers battery life that is usually equal to other devices in the
Windows Phone 8.
Our interactions with the phone were often
very quick - things like browsing the webs, playing media and navigating menus
all had smooth feelings. The Lumia 822 is also fast to find the GPS location,
which is very helpful to consider the Nokia’s focus on location-based
applications. However, there are still several sections around the Lumia phone
series might be improved. One example is the Nokia's home-grown applications,
which take much more time to load than the core OS components of the operating
system such as messages and dialer applications (dialer). Its camera is a bit
cramped - it takes a few seconds to properly focus and meter the exposure of a
scene. While that's not a big issue, the Lumia 822 takes about 40 seconds to
cold boot, which doubles the time we have expected from the modern smartphones.
The call quality on the Lumia 822 is
passable, but it is not on the top either. Even during the calls to landlines,
we often found that the other’s voices at the other end were tiny, and our
friends often commented that our voices sounded distant. While you will not
have any problems having a conversation with the Lumia 822, if the voice
quality is especially important to you, we suggest that you should consider the
Lumia 810 from T-Mobile.

The Lumia 822 offers battery life that is
usually equal to what we have seen from other devices in the Windows Phone 8.
In this aspect, you will not have any problems when you bring your phone a day
or even two with moderate to average-level time usage. Also, it is worth noting
that you are able to extend battery life by disabling the SkyDrive sync, and if
you're really stuck, Windows Phone 8 includes a battery saving-mode that
disables the tasks of data background. Also in line with its peers, the Lumia
822 operated for 2.5 hours in the battery WPBench tests. When it is time to
charge, you will be able to charge the device in less than 2 hours.

Carl Zeiss 26mm f/2.2 lens, which comes along with a dual-LED flash two and a
two-stage capture button. By default, the camera is set to take pictures at
16:9, although we normally prefer the optional 4:3 aspect ratio, which takes
full advantages of using the camera's sensor.
Unfortunately, the setting is not the
fastest of its kind you will encounter, which is mainly due to the erratic AF
implementation. However, your patience will be rewarded with beautiful photos
that offer an excellent volume of detail. In all but the most uncommon cases,
the Lumia 822 properly meters light and provides accurate white balance. The
low light performance is another strong point, in spite of the lack of a true
HDR mode in the software.

In simple camera application, you will
recognize the ability to adjust ISO, EV and white balance, along with several
scene modes such as close-ups, night, sports, and backlight. While the
selections are somewhat limited, our primary complaint is with the software
interface, which causes trouble for you to preview your adjustments.
In addition to the core camera software,
you can extend the photographic options with the special applications called
Lenses. At the first glance, the only Lens on Lumia 822 is Bing Vision, which
enables you to capture the QR codes and Microsoft Tags, search for books,
movies and albums by scanning the barcode or cover. Fortunately, it is fairly
easy to install other Lenses from this interface, which includes Nokia's own
additions such as Creative Studio, Panorama, Cinemagraph and Smart Shoot.
The Lumia 822 has the ability to record
video in 1080p (30fps/20.9Mbps) and if you can keep your phone stand still, you
will find that it is a competitor. However, you have to remember that the phone
lacks the optical stabilization technology of the Lumia 920, and this causes
you to take a risk capturing scenes of distracting jitters. Overall, the Lumia
822 records at a smooth frame rate with a great amount of detail and excellent
sound quality. The phone also has the ability to adjust the focus when you
record. The thing is worth being curious is that our test videos were not
excessive white balance changes which disturbed the Lumia 920 and 810, although
your experience may be different from this one.
