Sony Xperia L - Balance Between Performance And Price

4/28/2013 9:20:22 AM

Apart from concentrating on the high-end devices, Sony also shows the determination that the firm will take good care of the medium-class phone line. The proof for that are the Xperia SP and XPERIA L dual which have just released, all of which received positive feedbacks. Sony XPERIA L is a phone having lower configuration than Xperia SP but it still possess many compelling features, attracting the users.

About hardware configuration, Xperia L is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus dual core processor (MSM8230) having the speed of 1GHz along with a 4.3inch screen offering 480x854-pixel resolution. The device also integrates a 1.750 mAh battery accompanying with STAMINA Mode battery saving tech that helps to extend the standby time. Additionally, Xperia L also has 8GB storage, supporting even microSD card.

For most of the current new smartphones model, Sony applies the way of direct integrating 3 Android buttons onto the device screen.

The device has 3 color options which are black, red and white.

Compared to the popular Sony’s smartphone released last year like Xperia U or Xperia Sola, the Xperia L has met well in photosensitivity respect and camera quality. About the design, Xperia L has the design that is somewhat like Xperia E smartphone with 2 bezel that look pretty cool, but the back is curved, which remind us of the design of the Sony Xperia Arc S that was once a “hit”.

In order to reduce the price, Xperia L doesn’t use the aluminum cover as Xperia SP or the high-class load-bearing glass of Xperia Z. instead of that, Xperia L still stay loyal to the glossy plastic cover as most of today’s products. However, different to Galaxy S4, the plastic cover on Xperia L is almost anti-fingerprint. With the weight of 137 g and the screen size of 4.3 inches, using Xperia L with one hand is completely comfortable. Besides, despite not having the monolithic design, Xperia L is still pretty solid, heavy pressing won’t deliver cranky feeing, with the case is well-fixed on to the body.

The end of Xperia L has a small strip of LED. Different to Xperia SP, this LED strip only flickers when you see the images in Gallery or listen to music, and it won’t do the same thing when there’s incoming call.

On the right side of the device is the group of volume rocker, the prominent rounded power button and the quick-capturing button.

On the left edge of Xperia L places a microUSB port and a small slot to open the case. The SIM slot is also put inside this case with 1.750mAh battery source.

The rear camera is the attracting and outstanding feature of Xperia L. Specifically, this device is equipped with Exmor RS camera as on Xperia Z, but the resolution is 8 MP. In spite of being able to shoot 720p videos, the camera on L can photograph and film with HDR mode.

The weak point of Xperia L is its screen quality and processing speed. Anyhow, it’s one thing that we have to accept because this is a popular smartphone device. Xperia L is packed with a 4.3inch screen, pretty low resolution which is 480x854 pixels (228ppi pixel density). The display level is at an acceptable level, the smooth of sharpness of course falls behind many 720p hay 1,080p screen. Besides, Xperia L is not supported the Bravia Mobile Engine 2 tech of Sony.

Xperia L runs on Jelly Bean OS with the modern Socialife interface from Sony.the device still supports the native apps including Walkman, Movies and Album, just like on Xperia Z.

The 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus processors (MSM8230) make the device run smoothly when operating on the Menu screen. Navigating or scrolling all works smoothly; however, the speed when launching the apps has big latency. According to the evaluation, the graphics capability of the device still meets the requirement when trying with the 3D games or run heavy multitasking, but of course, there’s no way to avoid mild shock. Additionally, the 1750 mAh humble-capacity battery on Xperia L is also a weak point that makes many users doubt.

With the medium hardware configuration, Xperia L at European market has the price of about 360 USD. That‘s a suitable and balanced price for the processing performance as well as the design of Xperia L. besides, the device will be officially on sale in the 2nd quarter this year.

Camera is the key that helps Xperia L compete with the medium-class devices.
