Nokia Lumia 810 – T-Mobile (Part 2)

4/27/2013 4:48:38 PM

Beyond design, there are other differences that help distinguishing the Lumia 810, 820 and 822 versions. In terms of battery life, Lumia 810 and 822 both have 1800 mAH batter, while the 820 just offers the 1650 mAh option. The same story for the front-facing cameras, as phones of T-Mobile and Verizon all have the capability to capture 1,280x960 pictures, while AT&T’s models are quality limited. On the aspect of built-in storage, Verizon’s Lumia 822 wins the award with 16GB of internal storage, while Lumia 810 and 820 just provide 8GB. However, this last reason will not be a big minus, because all of these three offer 64GB expandable memory. It should also be kept in mind that HTC 8X is lack of the microSD slot, which is enough to turn Lumia 810 to an easy choice for some T-Mobile customers.

The inclusion of Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 in 810 of Nokia is not a big surprise, because it is a part of the current Windows Phone reference platform. We will do into the performance’s detail later, but with the dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait CPU and Adreno 225 GPU, you can be confident in the nimble performance of the Lumia 810. Naturally, Snapdragon S4 is also known as connection options provider, which offers DC-HSPA+ access on the 850MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz bandwidth, with 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0. Performance and battery life

It is almost not necessary to tell the fact that the combination of Windows Phone 8 and SnapDragon S4 brings a wonderful performance. As you can expect, the test results allow the equality comparison of Lumia 810, Lumia 920 and HTX 8X, and the real performances are also very stable. It is a scenario for Windows Phone’s devices; many built-in applications are almost immediately open, with the typical animations of the operating system being the only delay. Unique applications of Nokia are also installed quickly, although the third-party’s applications like Yelp and Weather Channel require more time from 2 to 3 seconds.

IE 10 usually takes little time for displaying the first page, but complex webpages sometimes need more time to be fully loaded. This is a small inconvenience, but if you get used to panning and zooming through content when it is being loaded, you might encounter the scenario of stutters with abnormally longer wait. Therefore, despite of the excellent SunSpider testing scores of the browser, we were impressed that IE needs to be a little more subtle in order to offer such smooth and stable web surfing experience like Chrome and Safari.

In practice, the Lumia 810 is generally competitive, but still there are some aspects that it should consider enhancements. For instance, while the camera applications are quick to load, it is usually 3 to 4 seconds required for capturing the first picture. The cold-booting takes about 40 seconds, which is two times more than what we expected for a modern smartphone. Perhaps its strongest point is the almost-immediate GPS positioning from satellites. That is a bonus, according to the company’s emphasize on positioning-applications. Those who need excellent-quality calls would not worry because our calls were always clear and not distorted. People on the other end were also impressed by the clear and high-quality calls.

About the battery life, we could easily use two days with light to moderate usage, as the handset operated very well in the standby mode. In the heavier test, including the continuously picture taking and uploading, messages texting, web surfing under the sunlight and navigating around the town, Lumia 810 used up over half of its battery after 4 hours, whereas Lumia 810 has survived for 2.5 hours in the WPBench battery test. When charging the battery, we found out that Nokia’s micro-USB could fill up the battery within 2 hours. From our experience, it usually takes more time for wireless charging, although we could not check this with Lumia 810.
