(SunSpider scores: the lower, the better)

With built-in quad-core APQ8064 SoC, it is not surprising that test scores and graphics performance of the Xiaomi Phone 2 follow strictly the Padfone 2’s and Optimus G’s, so we will not go into detail here. We rarely have a problem on the phone nor hanging during the time we use it – not like the version we had before. The worry here is only in normal power mode (rather than performance mode or power saving mode), our evaluated unit only lasted 4 hours of the standard video playback test (we set the screen brightness at 50%, use 3G data but with Wi-Fi on, and keep Twitter, Gmail and Facebook running in the background). In real battery performance, we've got about 6.5 hours of normal use, mainly on 3G. It's better than 4 hours, but still lost to the competing devices. Hopefully it will improve over time – certainly the engineers should consider using more 3G, which is contrary to the popular 2G widely available in China.

Regarding audio input performance, Xiaomi Phone 2 has the Audience earSmart technology for dual-mic noise reduction, but the final result we had left a great impact on the volume, and some of the original purchaser of this phone also had similar problems during the call. In the same scenario (in the middle of a shopping mall in Hong Kong), our Padfone 2 creates a soft but audible voice, while the Xiaomi Phone 1S creates more natural records but still with effective noise reduction results. For some odd reasons, the noise reduction of the One X has not been activated (perhaps a certain type of errors), but in this case, we will keep the audio clip of it as reference.

Conclusion

We must praise Xiaomi for providing an incredible package at the price like this.

We must praise Xiaomi for providing an incredible package at the price like this. These guys proved that they are not here to make money fast with cheap components – they really should get double the price for the specs, not to mention many software features, along with the commitment updated weekly. Clearly, software and imperfect performance (especially the voice assistant’s interface, battery performance and strange English somewhere), but they can be modified, and the rest of it is stable and could be highly customized. In short, you would be a fool to miss the opportunity to pick this phone.

Now, given that the next step for Xiaomi is to expand advertising outside China, in which Taiwan has been confirmed as the next destination, maybe it will be followed by a number of European countries early next year. The biggest challenge at the moment is that it seems the company is struggling to catch up with the demand, for the opportunity rivals to accuse it of inciting false hype, as well as allowing them to catch up with the same products. As outsiders, we do not know the truth behind the scarcity of products, but it is for sure that taking on this new market will require large-scale production. Then they may worry about setting up new retail channels, which is very easy unless the local network carriers refuse to cooperate. Now, let's see where Xiaomi decoder box will take the company.
