The S Pen

The diversity in features is also an outstanding advantage to help separate the Note 8.0 from its rivals. Most notably on this product is the S Pen stylus. Using the same technology as on the Galaxy Note phone series, the larger size of the pen stylus helps make experiencing it more interesting. To use quickly the note application, users simply press the button and double-tap the screen, which is rather handy. The pen also helps snapshot the screen just by touching and holding pen gesture.

The multi-screen feature continues to be notably focused on the Samsung Note 8.0. However, instead of being opened from the S Note application, users can quickly access it by pressing and holding the Back key. There are about 21 apps that support multiple screens and are all displayed in a hidden list side of the screen. Thus, users can simultaneously surf the web and Facebook or watch video while chatting or messaging with friends or taking notes.

Besides the S Note, as usual on the Note 8.0, there is just one more Note HD app. There is no noticeable image editing app such as Photoshop Touch. Users who want more apps should access the Samsung Apps store for download them separately.

Performance and battery

The device reached 2,075 points with Geekbench 2.

The Note 8.0 is equipped with a strong configuration with the 1.6 GHz quad-core A9 Exynos 4412 processor, Mali-400MP graphics chip and 2 GB RAM. Along with the pre-installed Android 4.1.2 operating system, the device gives smooth experience when turning pages. In nearly a week of use, there were rare cases in which it lagged or stopped, which is quite common in the devices running Android though in the premium segment. However, when zooming in and out web pages, the browser still feels lagging as the images seem no to follow the hand gestures.

In the test of installing games requiring much graphics such as The Dark Knight Rises, Asphalt 6, GTA Vice City or Real Racing 3, the device ran well and did not have any shock situation.

Tested with the Geekbench 2 program, the Note 8.0 point gained 2,075 points, slightly higher than the Note II, 1,976 points. With the Quadrant Standard Benchmark application, it achieved a higher scores 6,904 than that of the Note II and the One X +. While the AnTuTu program, the device reached 16 899, equivalent to the 2012’s high-end One X + and the Galaxy S III at 16,900 points.

When using the device for about 45 minutes or more depending on the tasks, it gets rather warm near the microSD card slot on the back. However, this is not really uncomfortable to users and can be regarded as a superior advantage to the iPad Min as it is quite hot.

With the continuous 3G and Wi-Fi on, the demand for web surfing of about 2 hours each day, accessing Facebook, a few calls, writing and drawing about an hour, the device can last over 1.5 days. On holidays with more intensity of using it, it still works well within a day with its 4600 mAh battery. The time to use this battery is quite good, but still cannot fully satisfy customers who become increasingly more demanding.
