Trying to own a device or gadget that
stands out is very hard. Most of the time, manufacturers will eye at the same
‘winning design’ and everything starts looking monotonous. However, in the
world of speakers, the designs are mostly different. Some stand out while
others blend in. Edifier, on the other hand, plans to amaze. The company sends
its Spinnaker and let’s hopes it leaves more than an impression.

Head on
Out of the box, the Spinnaker left a huge
visual impact on the entire PC.com team. The review unit in the office is red
(why no black!?) and almost made it looked like an oversize devil’s horns.
Perhaps rhino horns? Isn’t that illegal? Oh wait; it is not a real horn. (Ed:
No, it’s NOD’s Obelisk of Light! C&C reference!) By the way, from the looks
of it, this is a design that begs people to love or hate it. There is no
mid-point at all. On the underside of the speakers are connectivity ports,
which provide a hard time when plugging the cables into because there is so
little room there.

Bounce
After playing different soundtracks using
the Spinnaker, the audio quality is seemingly not bad. Music is clear even when
set at higher volumes. Most of the details are there and distortion is kept to
a minimum. However, the bass in this speaker is odd. When facing towards the
listeners, the bass is everywhere. It may be the circular design that spread
out the overall sound output. Interestingly, when the sound field bounces against
the wall, it amplifies the performance by a few notches. It is a very weird
setup if you are not satisfied with the bass. For those who want that extra
bass boost, fret not as the Spinnaker has a sound-out for external sub-woofers
to plug in, so all is fine when this option is exercised.

Wireless twist
When I say wireless, I don’t refer to the
wireless connectivity of the speakers with any mobile device. That’s a given
for many, if not all, new speakers of late. Wireless here refers to the remote
that the Spinnaker uses. It’s a small dome like thing with a flat top that can
be pressed on to mute the sound. The dome is used to control the volume and to
lock onto devices wirelessly to stream music. It’s a cute device and works well
even if it happens to be another room. There is no need to shout across the
hall to turn the volume down! Hurrah!
