It’s no secret that the cameras of our devices could work a bit better at night or with low light. That’s where NightCap comes in offering users a camera replacement that captures up to 15x more light than any other app… so they claim.

Description: Nightcap

NightCap performs slow shutter photography, meaning it performs better in low light with an extended exposure range for brighter and more detailed imaged. You still need to hold your device carefully as any movement doesn’t exactly help, but the results are surprisingly good provided you can maintain a steady hand.

There’s a good deal of functionality with users able to change the shutter speed to adjust exposure, change focus and tweak the white balance then lock those settings in. automatic mode works well for most instances but it will probably take a bit of adjusting anyway to get the shot that you want.

Unfortunately it’s not really an app that lends itself to any spur of the moment situations. Ironically, the use for this app would seem best in spontaneous moments. The fact is, unless you’re a dead hand, you need to plan out your shot and ensure you remain almost perfectly still. Snapping off a shot actually only takes a few seconds but in reality this will produce a blurred image more often than not thereby requiring a more cautious approach.

That said, NightCap is an impressive tool, and the more camera savvy amongst us will find it a valuable app for their photography toolbox. When it’s done right, the results are very good and there aren’t any other apps that take a better night shot.
