Canon EOS 6D - A Superior Camera For The Enthusiast Photographer

6/11/2013 9:20:02 AM

A common concern most photography enthusiasts have is about the difference between the APS-C and a full frame sensor, the explanation is simple enough: With the same amount of megapixels, a full frame camera is larger compared to the APS-C, so its pixels have more area and are less likely to spill electric charges. These advantages enable full frame cameras to shoot better in less-than-ideal lighting conditions and higher ISOs. The other major difference is the crop factor, i.e. a 50mm lens on a full frame camera will be 50mm where as it will be equivalent to 80mm on a APS-C because of the 1.6x crop factor. So full frame cameras capture life-like frames in less lit environments and produce better images.

With dimensions of 144.5 x 110.5 x 71.2mm, the 6D is much smaller and lighter than the 5D Marklll, yet it is sturdy. The controls are well laid out and easy to use, even for new users.

The 6D is a 20.2 megapixel Wi-Fi enabled camera with a host of exciting features, like the 11 point auto focus, which remained sharp and fast throughout our test. Unlike most full frame cameras, the 6D sacrifices the CF card slot and depends entirely upon the SDHC card as they have become more reliable.

The most welcome addition to the EOS 6D is the addition of Wi-Fi, this enables access to Canon Apps available in the Android and iOS markets (We used Android apps during our review). The three apps DSLR Controller, EOS Remote and Camera Window functioned quite smoothly with the camera. We will review both Apps separately, later.

The image quality is superb in all conditions and compares well with Nikon D600 and Canon 5D Mark lll. The highlight of the test is 6D's high ISO performance. At 12800, the quality remains crisp with very less noise. Even at 25600, the noise level is negligible.

Video quality disappoints a bit, though not bad, we expected 7D-like quality. In our test with a 50mm f1.4 lens, we found slight more patterns in the video.

However, with its compact body and great price, a Canon user will absolutely welcome this camera.
