We got the World exclusive right to review about the new Tilt-Shift from Samyang – Let’s find out how the 24mm f/3.5 ED AS UMC works.

Tilt-shift lenses are usually too costly that many photographers cannot manages to justify the cost, although they are wonderful in controlling the focal plane and distortion. This new 24 tilt-shift product from Samyang just offers a retail price of $1,427, which makes it the least expensive product of the kind available now.

This lens is compatible with many different cameras, including Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony Alpha SLRs, or even with mirror less cameras if an adapter is used. There is no electronic or mechanical provided by this lens to accompany the camera metering system, although most cameras will perform good enough, using stop-down metering with center-weighted or spot metering modes.

Handling and features

Although Samyang is expected to skimp on the developing the quality to have this product as less costly than other competitors as possible, but they have not. High quality plastic and metal, textured external finish outlook of the lens barrel and the metal lens mount are such a great combination. The result is that the lens is quite heavy but very solid, although the 680g is not too heavy when it is used with Nikon D700 to conduct the tests.

The minimum focus length is 20cm

The minimum focus length is 20cm

We are very pleased with the manual focus, thanks to the smooth and balance damped force of the focusing ring, which will increase the lens’s length to half of a centimeter when setting it to minimum focus distance. At the maximum aperture, it is quite easy to use the focusing assist in the viewfinder, and then you can manually control the aperture to take photos. The closest focusing distance is 20cm, which is so ideal to shoot in narrow conditions, or even for close up shots, which is also possible for the lens. Tilt and shift movements performs very smoothly and it is easy to adjust the needed force to turn the dials via dials, which can also be used to lock the lens in the required settings. A wide range of adjustment is provided as the lens can be tilted by up to 8.5 degrees and shifted up to 12mm of axis.

The useful hyper-focal scale

The useful hyper-focal scale

On the lens barrel, there is a mark of a useful hyper-focal scale, although it is just applicable when no tilt movement is set. Both tilt and shift movements can make a 30 degree rotation independently, allowing users to align these two movements with each other when they need.
