1/29/2013 5:39:35 PM

Fast, fashionable and feature-rich, this router is perfect for offices and media enthusiasts who don’t want to invest in a sufficient 802.11ac access point.

With all the dramatic advertisements around 802.11ac Wi-Fi, it’s easy to forget that 802.11n is still the most popular Wi-Fi standard in use and it can provide a valuable and excellent speed. We were impressed by the recent Netgear router, especially 802.11ac R6300. Although they provide excellent operating performance, not all of them provide the total features of the opponents, such as the print server.

Therefore, we’re pleased to hold the top-ranking WNDR4500, dual-band router with 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 2 USB ports and the media host, file host and a pre-installed printer. It has simultaneous dual-band, which means that you can use 2.4GHz band and less crowded 5GHz band at the same time, allows people who have similar equipment  enjoy the faster speed in a wider range of 5GHz band, whereas, those with 2.4GHz device continue to have internet access.

The nice black unit it attached on a transparent plastic base which look pretty sophisticated and high-qualified. The symbols in front of the router are big enough to be seen from a far distance and straightforward. This is a router you don’t hesitate to put next to the TV or the home cinema systems.

Operating performance is the most important factor in router, and we’re pleased to announce that WNDR4500 had done an amazing job. It could be predicted that the weakest data transfer speed was recorded when we connected to it by using pre-installed Wi-Fi adaptor of Centrino laptop. We recorded a 48.4Mbit/s speed in 1m distance, 48.4Mbit/s in 10m and 25Mbit/s in 25m. They are extremely good data transfer speeds for a 2.4GHz band. There’s no other route we examined under the same conditions could reach that, from which made WNDR4500 perfect for those who had Wi-Fi adaptor insufficient in update.

We tested the operating performance of 2.4GHz band of WNDR4500 one more time by using WNDA3100 Wi-Fi adaptor of Netgear instead of  Centrino Wi-Fi adaptor. It created a small yet surprising increase in the data transferred speed, reaches 55.9Mbit/s at 1m, 53.6Mbit/s at 10m, and an impressive speed, 36.6Mbit/s at 25m.the first 2 speeds are very fast although DrayTek Vigor 2850n follow close behind that.

Of course, it’s on 5GHz band that we saw the fastest speed. While connecting with WNDR4500 by using pre-installed Wi-Fi of Centrino, we saw a 90Mbit/s-speed data transfer at 1m, 93.2Mbit/s at 10m and 16.7Mbit/s at 25m. These speeds are pretty good for an 802.11n router, but it’s not special - the 802.11ac routers we saw such as Netgear R6300 and Asus RT-AC66U reaching the same speed.

When performing a same test with WNDA3100 Wi-Fi adaptor of Netgear, we saw with our own eyes a dramatically increase in speed as the router transmitted the data at an incredible speed of 139.8Mbit/s in 1m, 139.8Mbit/s in 10m and 60.1Mbit/s in 25m. They were the best speed that we saw from an 802.11n router, and this made WNDR4500 router become an indispensable one for the busy offices where wires make them a mess and media enthusiasts who don’t want to invest in an 802.11ac access point. We could play Full HD videos at a distance of 25m and also jump back and forth quickly without having the notable buffering problem. Witt Wi-Fi adaptor pre-installed through 2.4GHz band, we can still see and move smoothly through 720p video, but 1080p video has lag and stutter while playing and it takes us 4 seconds to buffer when we move to another time in the video. The video which is being played from USB drives is connected to one of the USB port of WNDR4500.

The connection to the USB is very easy. As compared with other Netgear ReadyNAS routers, you just need to open the run command and type ‘\\readyshare’. You can configure it for HTTP and FTP access, and the media transfer from which is very easy. If you want to connect to a USB printer, you will need to download Readyshare utility of Netgear and install it on all the PCs that are going to share the printer. It lists any printer available on your network - you just have to choose the printer you want and click the connect command to use it as you are going to do with a locally attached printer.

Despite the amazing features and operating performance, WNDR4500 is not expensive. With $172.5, it’s an excellent choice as compared with AVM Fritz!box 7390 which provides similar features. If you want the best available operating performance of 802.11n, buy WNDR4500 and WNDA3100 Wi-Fi adaptor of Netgear.

Despite the amazing features and operating performance, WNDR4500 is not expensive.
