Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB With Long

The Caviar Black 1TB disc did a slightly bad job in the large file transfer test, with an average throughput of 124.6MB/s, which is generated by the write speed of 123.3MB/s and read speed of 125.9MB/s. They belong to the type of the slowest large file transfer speeds we've ever seen from a SATA3 hard disc. However, the performance of the small file transfer test proved to be slightly better, with an average transfer rate of 58.5MB/s, write speed of 60.3MB/s and read speed of 56.7MB/s. generally, this disc is not the best thing if high performance is your highest priority.

With 11 cents per gigabyte, this 1TB hard disc is a bit expensive. If you are looking for a system hard disc or a cheap 1TB storage disc, then Samsung Spinpoint F3 is better, even if it only has a SATA2 interface. Meanwhile, the Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB, even if it’s slow and just a little bit more expensive, it gives you double capacity.

Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB With Great Performance

It’s not the cheapest 2TB hard disc, but if you want great performance, this should be the one for you to buy.

At the moment, 2TB discs have a convenient position between price and capacity and it is ideal for PC users who are addicted to media, or as a system disc or data disc with a fast boot SSD. With 9.5 cents per gigabyte, the Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB disc is definitely not the cheapest on the market, but it has a 5-year warranty and has good performance in our file transfer performance tests.

In the large file transfer tests, it created an average throughput of 133MB/s, the write speed of 135.2MB/s and the read speed of 130.8MB/s. The average file transfer speed of 68MB/s was also pretty good, though it did not set a record, and the write speed of 62.5MB/s and read speed of 70.7MB/s were very fast. Generally, compared to other competitors, Western Digital’s Caviar Black 2TB hard disc is fast.

It's not as cheap as Seagate Barracuda 2TB, which costs only $115, or more than 4.75 cents per GB. However, the Western Digital disc is two times faster than the Seagate Barracuda disc when transferring small files, which makes it more suitable to be used as the system disc. This great performance, along with the reasonable price of the disc, made this 2TB Caviar Black the 2TB hard disc that won our Best Buy award.

Western Digital Caviar Black 4TB - Large And Superfast Hard Disc

Large and superfast, but the high price decreases its overall scores.

The performance of the disc in our test throughput proved to be excellent, which is what you expected from a premium SATA3 disc at the spinning speed of 7200rpm. In the large file read speed tests, the write speed of 151MB/s and the read speed of 143.5MB/s created an average rate of 147.3MB/s. It was very fast in the small file transfer tests when writing data, with a speed of 88.2MB/s. However, its read speed of 53.1MB/s was slower than what we had expected, which created an average small file transfer throughput of 70.6MB/s.

The only real competitor of Caviar Black 4TB is Hitachi’s Deskstar 7K4000. Hitachi's storage department is currently owned by Western Digital, so more or less the company has dominated the 4TB discs market for consumers. Although Western Digital’s 4TB disc is faster than Hitachi’s disc, it is much more expensive. Provided that Hitachi’s Deskstar 7K4000 is not bad, it will be a better choice.
