Cheap with good performance - this is
an excellent 2TB hard disc.
If you are looking for a cheap 2TB hard
disc, you will not find a better Western Digital's Caviar Green 2TB, which is
less than 6.5 cents per gigabyte. However, the cheap price is meaningless if
its performance is inadequate.
Western
Digital Caviar Green 2TB
The Caviar Green series is designed to save
energy, so it only has a spinning speed of 5400rpm, compared to the normal
desktop disc's 7200rpm. Western Digital has made some caching algorithms
designed to eliminate the decrease in performance resulting from the slow
spinning speed.
This seems to have been successful in the
large file transfer test, as the performance of the disc was the same as that
of other competitors running at full speed, achieving an average of 139.8MB/s
depending on the write speed of 133.1MB/s and the reading speed of 146.4MB/s.
However, in the small file transfer tests, it reached an average of 47.1MB/s,
with the slow write speed of 37.6MB/s and the read speed of 56.6MB/s. This
makes it suitable to be used as a data disc rather than the system disc.
However, it is not necessarily a bad thing,
especially if you have a fast boot hard disc or an SSD in the system. If you
just want a lot of space at a good price, Western Digital's Caviar Green 2TB is
just too hard to beat, and it won the Budget Buy award.

Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB - An Energy-Saving Hard
Disc
If more space and low price are what
you want, this low-power disc is for you
Western Digital’s Caviar Green 3TB is an
energy-saving 3TB hard disc designed to save power by using Western Digital's
IntelliPower technology, which uses multiple caching algorithms to achieve the
best performance available from the spinning speed of 5400rpm of the disc.
Western
Digital Caviar Green 3TB
A low-power disc will probably not be as
fast as other power-consuming counterparts, but the Caviar Green did a pretty
good job if considered about everything. Its performance in large file transfer
test was particularly good, with an average of 139.2MB/s based on the write
speed of 132.1MB/s and the read speed of 146.3MB/s.
It was in the small file transfer tests
that the slow spinning speed had a bad influence. Here the disc’s throughput
dropped to an average of 47.5MB/s, the read speed of 38.4MB/s and the write
speed of 56.6MB/s. They were not bad for a low-power disc, but it meant that
it’s more appropriate to be used as a data disc rather than the system disc.
The actual compensation of the Western
Digital Caviar Green 3TB is that it’s cheap, which costs only a bit more than
4.75 cents per gigabyte. A two-year RTB warranty is not very generous, but we
can forgive it at this price, and this hard disc won a Budget Buy award.

Western Digital Caviar Red 3TB For Home And Small
Enterprises NAS Devices
If you are looking for a NAS disc and
do not need a fast write speed for small files, this should be a great choice.
While most hard discs are designed for
versatility, Western Digital’s Red SATA3 disc series are designed to be used at
home and in NAS devices for small enterprises. It is designed to achieve
durability and energy efficiency, and has low noise, at only 23dB(A).
Western
Digital Caviar Red 3TB
Western Digital’s IntelliPower system
promised a faster throughput than what you would expect from a 5400rpm disc. As
promised, its performance in our tests is the same as that of many SATA3 discs
running at the spinning speed of 7200rpm.
In the large file transfer tests, it wrote
at 145.8MB/s and read at 150.7MB/s to achieve an average speed of 148.3MB/s.
However, it was not very fast for writing small files, with a throughput of
41.2MB/s. Reading small files proved to be better, at 62.2MB/s, achieving an
average rate of 51.7MB/s.
While the slow write speed for small files
means that Red is not ideal if you want to back up your data often to the NAS
device, for example, low energy consumption, low noise and a three-year
warranty make it suitable for that intended purpose. With only 6.5 cents per
gigabyte, this price is also great, but you can buy Western Digital Caviar
Green 3TB which is slightly cheaper if performance is not so important to you.
