Seasonic SSR-550RM (G-550)

Packaging and accessories

The packaging and accessories of this model are similar, so we do not need to describe them again.

The fabric bag is to store the unused power cables in.

The unique thing is added to the design of this 550W model: there is a fabric bag to store the unused power cables in.

We can identify the only external difference from the low-end model: the connectors for the cables. However, if two PSUs are laid next to each other, the 500W model seems slightly longer (160 instead of 140 mm).

There is a screw at the bottom panel, whereas the SSR-360GP model does not have.

Circuit design

Circuit design

Generally, the interior design is similar to the one of low-end model above. The SSR-550RM features with PFC, which is very useful and voltage regulation is based on DC-DC controllers.

However, the placement of components on the main PCB is another matter.

The components which are considered individually are different, similar to the DC-DC converter card. There is no doubt because the power strips work in mcws higher in this model.

Since the PSU’s front panel is now positioned by the connectors for the cables, so the controller chips have to move to two small daughter cards.

One of them contains a PS223 supervisor. It is used in many PSUs from different brands and different prices.

The remaining daughter card carries a connected half-bridge LLC converter Infineon ICE2HS01G LLC along with a PFC controller 3PCS01.

The structure of the product

As in the low-end model, there is a Hitachi AIC capacitor at the input and the electrolytic capacitors from Rubycon elsewhere.

The output capacitors are manufactured by United Chemi-Con.

Cables and connectors

SSR-550RM is equipped with cables and connectors as below:

·         A mainboard cable with a 24-pin connector (54 cm)

·         A CPU cable with 4 +4- pin connector (54 cm)

·         Two connectors for graphics card cables

·         Four connecting ports for peripheral power cables

Coming with the PSU are:

·         Two graphics card cables with one 6+2-pin connector on each (60 cm)

·         One cable with three PATA power connectors (40+13+12 cm)

·         One cable with two PATA power connectors (31+12 cm)

·         One cable with four SATA power connectors (40+12+12+12 cm)

·         One cable with two SATA power connectors (30+12 cm)

·         One adapter from a PATA power connector to a floppy-drive plug (10 cm)

The choice of connectors depends on the number of PSU’s wattage but the CPU power cable is too short. It has the same length as in the low-end model above (the difference is allowed in the measurements of the manufacturer: both PSUs have a CPU power cable with the length of 550 mm and with a tolerance of -15/+30 mm), but the SSR-550RM is used in a large system case where the 550mm cable will not be long enough to be shielded inside the mainboard.

The technical specs are in accordance with those of low-end models and meet today’s standards. The SSR-550RM can make the most of its power through +12V rail while the capacity is to simultaneously combine the +3.3V and +5V rails is only at 100 watts.

The standby power source can load up to 2.5A, as a characteristic of the mid-range PSUs.

Similar to the previous models, the SSR-550RM comes with the 80 PLUS Gold standard.
