V5-551G is among few laptops using AMD
Trinity 4 quad-core chip, featuring powerful graphics with Dual Graphics
technology, to meet usage for both working and gaming.
Acer Aspire V5-551G owns simple design colored
taupe and rounded corners, bring a feeling of compactness and slimness. The
machine is equipped with 15.6in LCD LED back-lit display in a size/weight of 38.2x25.3x2.1cm/2.3kg,
thus is easily carried along.

Sound system was also improved by a pair of
2.0 speakers, supporting Dolby Advanced Audio ver.2. Stereo sounds fine yet it
lacks mid-range and treble like in most of other laptops.
Contacts and peripheral devices are placed
in sides, supporting maximum connections for users. Specifically, in the left
lies USB 3.0 port, HDMI output, 5-in-1 card reader, RJ-45 Gigabit port and
headphone/micro combo slot.
DVD+/-RW
and 2x USB 2.0 connectors are in the right.
In the right, there’re 2x USB 2.0 ports,
standard VGA and DVD+/-RW optical drive. Besides, there’s also an extended card
for hi-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Display, keyboard and touchpad
Aspire V5-551G is equipped with Cine
Crystal technology for advanced display, nicer contrast and less reflection in
both outdoor and indoor environments. However, due to the large screen size
(15.6in), maximum resolution can read 1,366x768 pixels, equivalent to a 13.3in
screen, thus sharpness and visual details are a bit lower-quality than in a
13.3in screen.
The
15.6in LCD screen incorporates Acer Cine Crystal technology.
It’s an upside that V5-551G features a
full-size LED back-lit keyboard supporting basic keys and a group of keys on
the right; handier for financial works. Though in small size, the keys have proper
distances to comfort user. Regardless of that, sensitivity is mediocre and
pressure required for each button is not equal; especially the space bar affects
key feeling when typing at a fast speed.

The multi-pointing touchpad is wide plus
easy-to-use, simplifying operations. As it is seamless, right/left mouse
buttons are concealed yet they are still user-friendly.
Performance
Our test model features AMD Trinity
A8-4555M (1.6GHz, 4MB cache L2, 19W), 4GB of RAM (DDR3, 1,333MHz bus) and 500G
HDD. Aside from the Radeon HD 7600M card integrated in the A8-4555M processer,
the device is also equipped with a Radeon HD 7600G discrete graphic card
supporting Dual Graphics technology.
Basically, Dual Graphics is collaboration
between IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) and GPU (Graphic Processor Unit) in
order to improve the system’s graphic performance. However, it must be noted
that not all of apps and games supports this kind of technology.
The following result shows a good general
performance from Aspire V5-551G, meeting working, gaming and mobile
entertainment. It also proves the power of Dual Graphics. Specifically, compared
to the setting featuring Radeon HD 7600G only, the Dual Graphics setting’s
performance was higher by 52.7% (graded by 3DMark 11), 42.4% (in Alien vs.
Predator) and 6.99% (in PCMark 7 test). With Street Fighter IV, the score didn’t
change much as the game isn’t supported.
The device ran quietly and cooling system
worked effectively in hi-graphic programs and games. Though, runtime recorded
by MobileMark 2007 showed that the test configuration’s runtime was only 3h
40min, quite low among models we had tested.
Detailed result
Through ATTO Disk Benchmark, the device’s
average read/write speed was 71.7MBps/74.6MBps for a 2GB data.
Cinebench R11.5 (64 bit) delivered results
of 1.33 for CPU and 23.54fps for OpenGL.
Graphics performance
V5-551G scored 1,449 in Graphic test and
1,420 in general performance test; three times as much as the score of the
integrated HD Graphics 4000 in Core i5-3317U processor (whose Graphic score is
511).
Similar with Alien vs. Predator, frame rate
reached 48.4fps then fell down to 36.7fps when we lowered the setting (medium
quality, 0xAA, 4xAF).
V5-551G got a fair result in Street Fighter
IV, with a score of 8,623 and 44.8fps at 1,366x768pixel resolution (default
setting).
Battery life
Using Mobile Mark 2007 to grade the model’s
runtime, we received a result of 3h 40min, quite lower than other tested
models.
Heat elimination
Beside performance tests, we also examined
the laptop’s cooling system in a 26-degree-Celsius environment. The machine ran
fluently in graphic processes and games. For instance, in 3DMark 11, the peak
temperatures were 62 degrees for processor and 59 for discrete graphic card; considerably
lower than other laptops featuring discrete GPU.
