Asus VivoTab Smart is equipped with an
Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core processor at the speed of 1.8GHz and 2GB RAM, 64GB
of internal memory with Intel's integrated graphics chip.
In an actual test, when we installed simultaneously
two applications in desktop mode, which were Spotify or iTunes, the VivoTab
Smart’s performance greatly reduced. Similarly, on activating at the same time
three programs including Asus Cloud Storage, iTunes and Spotify, it took a few
seconds to open one application at a time.

To evaluate the overall performance of the device,
we used the PCMark 7. Accordingly, the VivoTab Smart scored 1,399 points, which
was lower than the average of 2,973 points compared with Intel Atom-powered
devices, including Acer Iconia W510 (1,305 points), Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 (1,428)
and Dell Latitude 10 (1,440). Microsoft Surface Pro ($999) with an Intel Core
i5 scored much higher with 2,739 points in the same test.
The VivoTab Smart uses a 64GB SSD with the boot
speed into Windows 8 of just 19 seconds, faster than the average of the tablet which
is about 28 seconds and similar to Acer Iconia W510’s (20 seconds). Lenovo
ThinkPad Tablet 2 and Dell Latitude 10 performed the same test with 16 seconds,
while HP Envy x2 only took 14 seconds to boot into Windows 8.
Asus Smart VivoTab’s 64GB SSD needs 4
minutes 48 seconds to complete the Laptop File Transfer test to copy 4.97GB of
data, including multimedia files with data transfer speed of 17.7 MBps, below
the average (53.8 MBps) compared with other tablets. While Lenovo IdeaPad
Tablet 2 completed the same test with 21 MBps, Dell Latitude 10 and HP Envy x2 with
22 MBps. Microsoft Surface Pro outdid all other competitors with the data
transfer rate of up to 124 MBps.
The device uses Intel Graphics Media
Accelerator graphics chip, so Asus VivoTab Smart can handle well some games
like Judge Dredd vs. Zombies and Jetpack Joyride. In fact, the device's GPU cannot
run the 3DMark11 performance test because its graphics does not support DirectX
11.
Battery Life
With its battery life of 8 hours 17
minutes, Asus VivoTab Smart’s battery is longer than average (7:12) of other
tablets after being tested by the Laptop Battery Test tool (surfing websites
via Wi -Fi with screen brightness set to 40%). Acer Iconia W510 lasted a little
more with 8 hours 49 minutes, up to 15 hours 09 minutes with the accompanying dock.
In the meantime, Dell Latitude 10 only lasted 7 hours 16 minutes with 2-cell standard
battery and 17 hours and 40 minutes with 4-cell battery. Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet
2 was the most impressive with 9 hours and 42 minutes.

Software
In addition to Asus’s exclusive camera
application, Asus also installed tools such as My Library to store ebook, My
Dictionary, SuperNote, Asus WebStorage with 32GB of free online storage for 36
months. There is also Asus@Vibe Fun Center and Amazon Kindle.
Other applications include Netflix, Skype,
FingerShare for data management and other free games like Pinball FX 2,
Taptiles, Microsoft Solitaire and Mahjong. There is also a pre-installed 30-day
trial version of Microsoft Office. But if you choose the model that runs
Windows RT like the Surface R, a version of Office Home & Student 2013 will
be installed on your device for free.
After installing Windows 8, the 64GB model
of the device will only have 34.2 GB of free space for users to store their data.
Configuration
Currently, the VivoTab Smart has no
configuration options, but it offers a model that runs Windows RT called Asus
VivoTab RT. The model is quipped with a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU, a 8MP
rear camera. It also will have the option of a keyboard dock which offers
nearly five hours of battery life for users.

Conclusion
Asus Smart VivoTab is impressive with the
sharp display, long battery life and the ability to run both Windows 8
applications and traditional desktop programs, but at the same price as Microsoft
Surface that runs Windows RT, its limitation to run desktop programs. Moreover,
at $499, users have 64GB of internal memory, double the capacity of Acer Iconia
W510 32GB model but at the same price (the 64GB model of W510 is available at up
to $579).
To get such a price, Asus forced to cut off
costs in a number of aspects, which is the most easily recognized such as the plastic
design and the lack of a full-sized USB port. The TranSleeve keyboard option ($129)
is quite useful, but it is not as convenient as a dock. Users can choose Acer
Iconia W510 32GB with a keyboard dock (with extended battery) at $549.
Although it is not a replacement for laptops,
Asus VivoTab Smart is a pretty good choice for users who want to buy a tablet
running Windows 8 at a reasonable price compared with its competitors.
