Lenovo Ideapad S400 - Attractive Design And Affordable Price (Part 2)

Lenovo IdeaPad S400 use the 3rd-generation 1.8GHz Intel Core i3-3217U microprocessor, 4GB RAM and 5400rpm 500GB HDD, which can handle most of everyday ’s tasks such as surfing web, accessing the social networks, running app like Office, watching movies, listening to music… Practical test when watching "Shin Chan" video at full screen mode, while there’re 6 tabs opening in Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, there’s no picture/sound latency appears.

With the system overall performance test - PCMark 7, IdeaPad S400 scores 2,161, lower than the average level (2,814 points) of the ultraportable laptops. However, this score is enough to beat Asus Q200 (with 1.4GHz Intel Core i3-2365M microprocessor) and HP Sleekbook 15z-b000 (1.7GHz AMD A8-4555M quad-core processor) with 1,567 points and 1,469 points respectively.

IdeaPad S400 only needs 20 seconds to launch into Windows 8, while Asus Q200 with 5400rpm 500GB HDD needs 23 seconds. Sleekbook 15z-b000 is more impressive with 18 second in the same test.

On a duplicative test of 4.97GB of data including music, video and images files through File Transfer Test, the hard drive of IdeaPad S400 needs 3 minutes 23 seconds with the data-transferring speed of only 25.1 MBps. The speed above is lower than the average level (43 MBps) compared to other laptops on the same segment, but better than Sleekbook 15z (23 MBps) and Asus Q200 (21.4 MBps).

Using integrated Intel HD 4000 Graphics, Lenovo IdeaPad S400 is able to run high-definition video files and play most of casual game. Testing the graphics capability of the system with 3DMark11, the device scores 551, lower than the average level (739 points). HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15z-b000 with discrete AMD HD 7500 graphic card also scores 468.

The Lenovo Companion group will offer you many options such as Getting Started Guide for those who have just used Windows 8, the links to the apps of Lenovo have been approved, Lenovo Support app will provide users with the detailed instruction guides, as well as fast access to the system info, software and warranty. Besides, there’s One Touch Recovery that helps you restore your laptop to a prior backup system point when necessary. 

Other branded apps will be pre-installed like SmartUpdate, which will auto-update the email and social networking notifications in designated intervals even when the system is at sleep mode. Besides, there’s Photo Show that helps you edit your pictures.

The third-party software will also be installed including Rara music service, PDF-maker, Nitro Pro 7. Besides, there’re Evernote and AccuWeather.com,ypu will also find other software such as Skype, Lenovo Cloud Storage of SugarSync and the trial version of Microsoft Office 2010.

Like most of the laptops running Windows 8 in the same price segment, Lenovo IdeaPad S400 also has low battery life; when testing Laptop Battery Test (continuous surfing web via Wi-Fi connection), the device can only work continuously in 3 hours 24 minutes. The time above is 2.5-hourT shorter than the average level (5:57) of the ultraportable laptops. HP Sleekbook 15z-b000 can last a bit longer with 3 hours 53 minutes and the Asus Q200 last the longest with 4 hours 19 minutes.

Conclusion

For a laptop having the price under 500 USD, Lenovo IdeaPad S400 is a good mixed solution between comfort, speed and portability. With the price from 455 USD, you will have the system with the power of Core i3 processor in a compact and lightweight design along with the suitable keyboard and touchpad design. However, users will have to accept the short battery life to have a laptop running Windows 8 at this price. It can be said that IdeaPad S400 is a good choice for office users.
