The speaker of the laptop is designed above the keyboard and integrated with SonicMaster audio tech, so it helps to improve the audio quality significantly. When listening to music, the sound is clear and sharp with better quality than of the laptops on the same segment. Besides, Asus also install Audio Wizard software in companion that allows users to switch between built-in music configurations suitable for needs like: listening to music, watching movies, gaming and audio chatting. The audio quality also drops significantly when the Audio Wizard software is deactivated.

Performance

Asus Q200 offers pretty modest performance but suitable for a laptop with such budget.

Asus Q200 offers pretty modest performance but suitable for a laptop with such budget.

With the 1.4GHz 2nd-generation Intel Core i3-2365M microprocessor, Intel integrated HD 3000 graphics and 5,400 rpm hard drive, Asus Q200 offers pretty modest performance but suitable for a laptop with such budget. Basically, users can completely use this for daily tasks such as watching HD videos, web surfing, running office apps… but not gaming and video editing.

Evaluating the overall performance of the laptop by PCMark 7, Asus Q200 only scores 1,567, less than half (3,436 points) of the average level of the ultraportable laptops and far behind the Core i5 CPU of Acer Aspire V5-171-6867 (2,427 points) and Asus VivoBook X202E with Core i3 CPU (2,040 points).

500GB, 5,400 rpm hard drive boots in Windows 8 in 23 second, much faster than the average level of 30 seconds and only 2-second lower than VivoBook X202E (21 second).

However, the drive needs 3 minutes 58 seconds to complete the Laptop File Transfer test when copying 4.97GB of data including multimedia files (images, music and videos) with the data-transferring speed of only 21.4 MBps, much slower than the average level (82.9 MBps) of the ultraportable laptops, but still faster than Acer AspireV5-171-6867 (14.9 Mbps) and almost equal to VivoBookX202 (25 Mbps).

About the ability of transcoding video, Asus Q200 only works at a moderate level

About the ability of transcoding video, Asus Q200 only works at a moderate level with the time to transcode an HD-formatted video file having running time of 5 minutes to video standard for iPod touch by Cyberlink Media Espresso with the time of 1 minute. While the ultraportable laptops only need 41.1 seconds to complete the same test, Acer Aspire V5-171-6878 only takes 18 seconds.

Asus Q200 is absolutely able to play 1080p videos smoothly without having any problem, as well as be able to handle any games downloaded from Windows Store. However, users shouldn’t expect that the device can run newer games.

Battery life

Though Asus Q200 is lightweight, its short battery life cause many obstacles to its portability. The laptop can only work consecutively in 4 hours 19 minutes when surfing web via Wi-Fi connection and checked through Laptop Battery Test. The time above is 1 hour 43 minutes shorter than the average level of the ultraportable laptops (6:02), but equal to Acer Aspire V5-171-6867 (4:05) and Asus VivoBook X202 (04:20).

Conclusion

For an ultraportable laptop with the price of only 500 USD, Asus Q200 has a bundle of advanced features from the 10-point touchscreen to the speaker integrated with Sonic Master advanced audio tech. However, users would want a laptop with better keyboard and more durable design.

If you need a laptop with long battery life and more spacious keyboard at this price range, you can have a look at Toshiba Satellite P845-S4200 (549 USD). Though, if you want a portable laptop that costs you less, has light weight and possess a touchscreen to optimize for Windows 8, Asus Q200 is a right choice.
