New Generation Lenovo VIBE Z Review

5/21/2014 11:34:49 AM

When Lenovo entered the phablet market with the K900 last year, the world understood that this was a sign that the Chinese manufacturers were emerging in the world of smart devices. In fact, Lenovo is one of many companies that is breaking that age-old "Made in China" stigma, which has the world believing in the misconception that such products are cheap and of inferior quality. To prove us wrong, we give you the Lenovo VIBE Z.

The VIBE Z, or the K910, is the direct successor to last year's K900. As it is a direct descendant of the K900, the phone should, by default, be better than its predecessor since Lenovo would've had time to work out some of the quirks and even tweaked the VIBE Z. The device itself now has more curves, which give it a more comfortable feel in the hands. However, unlike the K900, the VIBE Z is not made entirely out of brushed metal. It's been replaced with a grip-friendly, easy-to-handle matte material.

It's not just the aesthetics that Lenovo improved upon either. The VIBE Z is the company's very first 4G LTE capable smartphone and that's actually a pride point on which they can boast about. Before the VIBE Z, the company had no phone that was capable of utilizing the currently existing 4G networks from our local telcos. Long story short, the VIBE Z now benefits from blazing-fast 4G LTE Internet speeds. The changes inside the VIBE Z don't stop there either. Before this, the K900 was fitted with Intel's Clover Trail+ SoC. This time around, Lenovo opted for Qualcomm's fast Snapdragon 800 SoC.

But the real highlight of the VIBE Z would have to be its wide angle front-facing camera. With sensor set at 5MP, the front-facing camera of the VIBE Z has a wide angle of 88 degrees, which definitely outpaces the previous maximum wide angle limit of 28 degrees on other smartphones. This extreme degree means that the VIBE Z is capable of capturing front-facing pictures (a.k.a. selfies) at a wide angle, without people needing to squeeze in too close.

In terms of performance, we ran our synthetic benchmark list of AnTuTu, Quadrant, 3DMark and Epic Citadel to see just how the VIBE Z would perform. On AnTuTu and Quadrant, the phone achieved a score of 32,302 and 19,382. On 3DMark's Ice Storm Unlimited test, it fared pretty well at a score of 16,179. On Epic Citadel, we performed two test modes: one on Ultra High Quality and one on High Performance. The VIBE Z averaged at 55 FPS on both tests, which is very good.

In conclusion, the VIBE Z's sleek look and top-notch features are what makes this phone a desirable device at the end of the day. If we were to gripe about one flaw on the phone, it would be the lack of an expandable storage slot. Besides that, we genuinely think that this phone is worth the money.
