Value and power in a blue HyperX Stick.

RAM sticks are probably the most fickle of PC components out there at the moment, with hard drives at a close second. It is quite hard to judge the effectiveness of RAM Sticks just by looking at the numbers that are printed on the packaging. More often than not, cost is always the overruling factor in choosing them, and with that in mind, we take a look at the new Kingston HyperX Blu 1,600MHz DDR3 RAM sticks.

As its name implies, the HyperX Blu is marketed as one of Kingston's more advanced RAM sticks, but whilst it features the same blue metallic heatspreaders as its other HyperX counterparts, as with other HyperX Blu sticks that came before it, this is really a budget performance stick for those who don't want to spend too much money on RAMs.

Available in kits of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB, the Kingston HyperX Blu runs on DDR3-1600 at a low latency timing of 10-10- 10, with the SPD programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR-1333 timing of 9-9-9. Low latency timing means that there is less delay in the memory controller accessing a memory column on a RAM module.

Installed on the latest Intel Core ยก7-3770K processor, with the Intel D77GA- 70K motherboard and an ASUS GTX 670 graphics card, and despite running the benchmarks on single channel DDR (Kingston only sent us one stick), the scores that we got were pretty impressive.

We'd imagine that if we got the HyperX Blu to run on a dual channel or quad channel memory, the performance would most likely be even better, so we do suggest those who are thinking of getting this stick to get it in two's or fours to get the most out of the sticks.
