WD's My Passport (2TB) - Never leave home without it

7/11/2012 5:46:50 PM

On the travelling life with WD's My Passport (2TB).

Travelling is all about luggage management. One sock-sized miscalculation and everything could go bust, and you will not want to have to choose between the notebook or clean underwear for three days. Either way, the more portable and practical your luggage contents are, the better. Western Digital continues this fine tradition with its new generation of WD My Passport portable hard disc drives.

The new My Passport is expectedly portable, even if it's a little bulkier than other portable HDDs. The little extra fat is justified with its massive, massive storage space: at 2TB, the My Passport just about has the largest storage space we've ever had on a portable HDD. And since you're very likely to travel constantly with the My Passport, the built of the chassis is also welcomingly solid and rugged. It also looks pretty good, and comes in a variety of colors outside of pure black.

A pinhole LED light serves as an activity indicator, and that's just about everything else on the chassis, apart from the connectivity port. The new My Passport supports USB3.0 connectivity, which will keep the transfer rate speedy. While USB3.0 (and its backwards compatibility) is mostly sufficient, we would’ve liked it better if the My Passport comes with Firewire support; we're sure working creatives would agree.

Thanks to the USB3.0 interface, the drive can also read as respectably speedy speeds. In our test, it wrote files at 90MB/S and read them at 105MB/s: not entirely the fastest, but if you care little about the numbers, you can at least be assured that you don't have to tear your hair whenever you transfer large files.

Western digital wouldn't just give you an empty drive and leave it at that. The My Passport also comes with a few useful (and some not so) features to complete the experience. Utilities like the diagnostics works well but not exactly essential, but the password protection and hardware encryption is great to use and have. You can also have the drive to automatically back-up your PC on the background at predetermined intervals.

“If you need large storage space on the go, you can't leave home without the new WD My Passport, which gargantuan 2tb storage space and speedy transfer rates is more than enough to book a spot in your airplane luggage.”
