HP X2301 : Micro Thin, Macro Sights

7/11/2012 11:54:31 AM

And with HP's x2301 monitor, you see the bigger picture.

Describe the HP x2301 Micro Thin LED Backlit Monitor here. Ready? 1) It's micro thin. 2) It looks pretty. 3) It displays prettily. 4) It looks pretty. 5) It looks pretty. 6) Oh my, it looks really darn pretty.

And that, as first impressions go, is the grand picture. Everything about the x2301 is pretty; the black-silver combo, the glossy obsidian bezels, the classy stand, the glowing blue buttons... it all works. The classiness is elevated by the impressively slim 23-inch display (which isn't the thinnest, mind, but still very thin) that is also space-saving to boot.

The blue buttons aren't just for show. They also double up to provide a very simple but accessible OSD menu. It's easy to get the monitor configured to your preferences, and while it lacks features like ambience or motion detection, the options themselves are sufficiently robust. At the back of the stand are the connectivity ports, which offer DVI, VGA and HDMI options. Everything you'll ever need.

But it's the display quality that matters, right? You can be glad to know that the x2301 does display very nicely. It's bright, it's crisp and it does a bang-up job with colors. It displays motions very well, too a good point to note for gamers and mostly manages a respectable performance for dark images. It also does great in displaying small text, so you can put this monitor in consideration whether you're getting one for work, gaming or movies.

There are, however, two notable hiccups with the display. The first is the somewhat reflective screen. It isn't a problem when you're viewing brightly- colored images, but when things go dark you may be watching a bit of yourself. The viewing angle is also a little tight. Lean a little too much and the color tint will visibly change. They're not downright distracting, just perhaps a little niggling.

“The HP x2301 may have a few minor display niggles - the viewing angles and somewhat reflective screen, for example - but with it you get a slim, space-saving monitor that looks fantastic and stylish, and not to mention being able to provide some crisp, bright and beautiful display quality. Whole heartedly recommendable.”
