The live tiles on the Windows 8 Start screen
represent a smart and efficient way to display the latest information
updates for your favorite apps. Developers set out to design live tile
notifications so that you can have literally hundreds of apps running
live tiles and getting information updates without a drain on your
computer battery life.
>>>step-by-step: Changing Notifications
Notifications are turned on by default, which
means that you’ll be notified when the information updates for the apps
that display live tiles. The apps that have sound notifications also let
you know by playing a sound when an update arrives. You can control
notifications in two places: you can turn off notifications in the
Settings charm or you can change the notifications in PC Settings to
turn some off and turn others on if you like.
1. On the Start screen, display the Charms bar.
2. Tap Settings. The Charms bar expands to show a variety of system options.
3.
Notifications is turned on. To turn notifications off, tap the
Notifications icon. An x appears on the image to let you know the
setting is disabled. You can turn on all notifications again by tapping
the Notifications icon.
4. To turn off selected notifications, tap More PC Settings.
5. In the PC Settings screen, tap Notifications.
6. To turn off all notifications, drag the Show App Notifications slider to the left, or Off position.
7. To turn off notifications on the lock screen, drag the slider to the Off position.
8. Turn off sound notifications by dragging the Play Notification Sounds slider to the Off position.
9.
Choose notification settings for individual apps by scrolling down the
Apps list and turning off the Show All Notification slider for the apps
you don’t want to be notified for.
What Are Notifications?
Windows
8 can let you know when your apps have updated so that you can check
the new content. In some cases, the live tile may display fresh
information. In others, Windows 8 can let you know by displaying a popup
message and playing a sound.
