This is quite a wonder. I have been tasked
with reviewing one of the two P1 MiFi devices and have a whole page to fill up
for you – all for the enjoyment of reading my glorious musings about the tiny
gadget. This sort of thing isn't very common and just for the benefit of our
readers who do get out enough, it is a tiny wireless router that acts as a
Wi-Fi hotspot. This lets P1 sell a wireless broadband service for those who are
constantly moving and yet do not want to use their phone connection or are
those poor souls who don't have a phone that supports tethering.
My
Wi-Fi – P1 MX230
The MacGuffin
The MX230 fits in the palm of your hand and
has the styling of something eerily familiar. I can't exactly tell what that is
but the black and silver is reminiscent of something fruity. But I digress. The
size is perfect for moving around with. It fits into pockets with extra space
to spare. This means it plays well with keys, coins and gum that will also be
sharing the same real estate in a working man's uniform. The fact that it will
also easily slip into other carrying cases goes without saying. What also helps
with the ease of using the MX230 is the fact that it only has one button.
That's all you need to operate it. Press said button, device turns on and looks
for wireless signal. It's that simple.

The three indicator lights do various
things to tell the user what's going on. For example, a flashing red 4G light
means it's looking for a signal but turns a solid green light when it has a
good connection. Simple and easy to understand although it does take a little
time to get used to the different flashing lights.

Long lasting
P1 claims that the battery life extends for
about six hours of continuous use, which isn't bad. Unfortunately it doesn't
have a battery indicator so there's no way to tell how much power is left. This
is possibly a concession to keeping the thing small; although it is the one
miss that shouldn't have happened. In real world use, the MX230 was left on for
a whole day without running out of juice. The connection was a little spotty
but I personally suspect that the office is a black hole of radio waves. The
regular Wi-Fi in here is bad enough so I'm not surprised that P1's signal
doesn't work so well either.
