Synology Diskstation DS413 - Comprehensive Interface, Easy Access And Good Performance

8/12/2013 6:01:33 PM

The Synology DS413 is a NAS with 4-bay drive improved from basic DS413j, but has most of the DS412+ features, looks similar and more powerful at lower price. Instead of ARM processors, which are cheaper and run cooler than the low power Intel Atom, Synology has selected Freescale RISC processor. Chips require less cooling and improve power saving - the key for one product always open. The disadvantage is the reduced file serving power, especially in write performance. However, the performance gap is closing.

Features

Like DS412 +, DS413 with front visor is covered the new drive bay. Also in the front is a USB 2.0 port for data transmission or add capacity, but expansion is best handled by two USB 3.0 ports in the rear, or only an eSATA port. There are useful 1GB of memory, network connections are made via only gigabit port, and is cooled by two quiet 92mm fans.

Surface

Although nearly all of the plastic frame which does not have the quality feel of QNAP, for example, it is very good at containing noise.

Synology DiskStation Manager 4.1 Software is powerful and rich environment. It's nimble and innovative than the standard.

As well as file serving over standard PC protocols, such as SMB / CIFS, AFP and NFS, you can run the FTP server, iTunes and print, and start UPnP media streaming.

Sinology provides many applications in the Package Center. You will find applications such as Time Backup to sync Time Machine, Download Station to download BitTorrent, Cloud Station for cross-platform file synchronization and Surveillance Station for security IP camera recording.

We found Download Station can not only handle to download in the background with the timer schedule but also allows you to search for torrent files in the application.

Cloud Station may prove indispensable, allow you to automatically sync a folder on the NAS with 2 folders on Windows PC or Mac. This occurs over an encrypted SSL to your peace of mind. However, the single file is limited to 5GB, and you can’t copy the system file or applications. Worse, if you move files from one folder to another folder in the sync sub-folder, Cloud Station can find it is a new file and make copies, resulting in additional network traffic unnecessarily.

Surveillance Station wants to become the one-stop network video recorder to record footage from the security IP camera. Maximum of 16 cameras from many famous brands can be tracked. However, Synology licensing its software to allow you to view a feed camera, to see more, you'll have to buy a license, cost around $67.5 / camera, and $255 for 4 cameras.

We have successfully configured Synology DS413 to monitor and record feed 0f a Y-cam offsite camera. Ironically, for a security camera, you must install the Java, which is one of the least safe plug-in for modern PC.

Performance

DS413 is faster than NAS drive. Use four WD Red 3TB hard drives is optimized for network storage, our best results in our labs are recorded when using the ATTO test. We have witnessed continuous read speed up to 115MBps and 91MBps write speed.

The more realistic figure was recorded by using QuickBench via AFP tests, where the read speed for large files exceeds the gigabit Ethernet limit (112MBps) while write speed is at maximum speed with 100MB data size.

Our energy consumption test is hampered by a problem with the busy Windows network, preventing NAS from falling into a deep sleep System Hibernation. As a temporary remedy, disabling System Hibernation allowed the drives record slowly.

In full hibernate mode (disconnect the network), it only consumes 3W, a low admirable figure. We measured 13W with no activity hard drive while processors are still active. The idle consumption with spinning drive is 25W.

Under load testing, DS413 with four Red WD drives only consume 28W.

Verdict

DS413 sits comfortably between the entry-level DS413j and lauded DS412+. New RISC processor provides more performance than NAS drives are granted power by ARM with equivalent price, and low power consumption make it a wisely economical choice. With comprehensive interface, easy access and good performance, DS413 is worthy introduced.
