HP LaserJet Pro 100 - Compact Color Laser MFP

3/19/2013 9:45:17 AM

At first sight, the HP LaserJet Pro 100 is a hefty printer with a footprint of 441 x 421 x 338mm. However, as a color laser multi-function printer (MFP), it is exceptionally small and solid as it fits conveniently even when install LED on top of your office table, right beside your desktop.

The unit can support either a wired or wireless connection. The first will use either a USB cable or an Ethernet cable, but only a USB cable is supplied. Setting it up via USB installation is simple with the plug-and-play feature, or you can also use the CD included in the box. When in use, a message pops up on the computer screen for convenient tracking of the printer’s status. Quick wireless setup through Wi-Fi is just a matter of pushing a button on your router or entering a PIN on its interface.

Although the unit itself has a tiny user interface, it is very user-friendly, as it includes most of the important buttons needed to operate the printer directly. Monochrome and color copying can be done directly with the Black and Color buttons. You can even adjust the density of the printed copy with the Lighter/Darker button. You can also set the number of copies or configure how it copies documents with the “# Copies” and Copy Menu buttons, respectively. What it lacks is a Scan button, which means that you will need a connected computer every time you scan documents.

Monochrome printing is incredibly fast, but color printing takes a little more time since it waits for the ink cartridges to rotate due to its carousel-style cartridge bay. The four toner cartridges are seated on a rotating bay, with the black cartridge located at the ink output area by default. For colored printouts, the cartridges move around to mix inks, which means slower printing. This design results in its compact physique, but at the expense of its color printing speed.

Notably, it is virtually silent when printing, copying, or scanning, which may be a plus for users who get easily bothered by noisy printers.

The quality of prints is fairly good with striking black text and vivid color gradations. However, as with any laser printer, it is not recommended for printing on glossy photo paper because the print comes out flat and without the expected shimmer.

As a compact MFP, the HP LaserJet Pro 100 will not hog the space on your desk, and it will provide quality prints at a reasonable price. It offers the basic features needed, and if you don’t mind waiting a little for your printouts, then it can be of great value to you.
