Epson Expression Premium XP-605 - Comprehensive Printer

2/2/2013 3:08:29 PM

The newest MFP of Epson is an effectively comprehensive product but expensive when printing.

Description: Epson Expression Premium XP-605

Epson Expression Premium XP-605

XP-605 has a five-inkjet printer which uses the new Claria ink cartridges. We haven’t checked the faded color problem yet, but we think there will be no problem. Epson 5-ink cartridge set includes pigmented black ink for text; cyan, scarlet, yellow and black dye ink for printing pictures. Unlike the 6-inkjet model that focuses on pictures such as PX-730WD, it doesn’t have reddish or light cyan ink. The yellow cartridge seeps into our finger when we open the lid, which never happened to us before.

XP-605 is pretty fast for an inkjet printer and remarkably quiet, even when printing 16.3 pages of draft text each minute. The speed of picture printing is fast, even in the best quality, and it’s also fast in double-side printing. However, the prints are still clear through our average-thin test paper at default setting.

The printer works well. Graphics on plain paper has dark colors, no banding. The text is thick as compared with most of the competitors, but it’s acceptably dark and sharp at normal quality. Fresh images come with wonderful details in the dark areas and accurate color. Unfortunately, the checked black-and-white images of us lean toward scarlet and blue more than neutral gray, which is a surprise based on black ink for photos.

The scan components of XP-605 don’t belong to the sharpest type we’ve ever checked, but the images are well-exposed with accurate color and many details in the darkest and brightest areas. It’s also fast in low and average resolution. Our 1200dpi image test slows it down remarkably.

Unfortunately, XP-605 is expensive when printing. Black-and-white cost for 5.6p/page is especially high because it includes 2 black ink cartridges, though in fact, only one cartridge is used for the text. In contrast, the 5.1p cost for color page maybe slower than the actual figure. No matter how it is, the total 10.7p cost for each page is still high. Prices will fall only when new kinds of ink are more widely available, but it takes light away from the strongest comprehensive product of Epson.
