Design

Although the E6430 is not as sturdy and square as the tanks of Dell XFR or Panasonic Toughbook CF-31, it's still harder than your normal business laptop. MIL-STD-810G test confirmed that the E6430 will prevent a lot of unusual abuse: collision, falling to the ground and high temperature. E6430 also achieves IP5x certification, an index requires to meet the strict requirements of preventing dust and humidity.

E6430 is reinforced from inside to outside, starting with the aluminum cap, steel swivel, and aluminum alloy frame. The hard rubber cover can prevent dust. A raw plastic shell - similar to the removable liner on the floor of the truck - covers the edges of closed laptop, and the bumper (cushion) is made of rubber on the corners has added an extra protection. However, all this protection increased thickness and weight; E6430 has the size of 2.6x14.5x10.5 inches (HWD) and the weight of 6.3 pounds.

14-inch, 1366x768 pixel anti-glare screen with bright backlight to see clearly in the outdoor, 180-degree viewing angle ensure clear view from any location. Waterproof keyboard is illuminated by backlight and has a pointing stick and a multi-point touchpad.

Features

The rubber port can be forged on many high-end systems, but on the E6430, they are needed to combat unwanted moisture and dirt. It is a combined lid to protect the gate.

USB/eSATA, one 2.0 USB port, and one 3.0 USB port, while the other lids protect one powered USB 2.0 port, VGA output and headphone jack. At the back of the system, you will find the closed Ethernet and HDMI port, 1 opened power connector and the chassis lock. In front of the laptop is the integrated SD card reader. Other available options include ExpressCard and smart card reader, Intel vPro, wireless broadband solution for 3G and 4G Gobi.

Our test model is equipped with 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and Intel's Wireless Display technology, which allows you transmit wireless HD content to the TV that is equipped with appropriate adapter (such as Netgear Push2TV). A removable optical drive that can read and record CDs and DVDs; 256GB SSD increases the speed of performance and boot time, the lack of moving parts makes E6430 have less damage by vibration or physical shock. Because E6430 is designed for companies and businesses, it does not include bloatware, but it is installed Backup and Recovery and Dell Data Protection software to encrypt the drive. E6430 is further protected with 3 year of hardware warranty, including on-site services.

Performance

E6430 is equipped with dual-core processor Intel Core i7-3520M 2.9GHz and 6GB RAM. When combined with SSD, E6430 reached 5021 points in Futuremark PCMark 7 test and 3.43 points in Cinebench R11.5, giving it an advantage when compared with other sturdy business laptops like HP 8460p (2065 points in PCMark 7; 2.4 in CineBench) and Panasonic Toughbook CF-S10 (2164 points in PCMark 7; 2.01 in CineBench).

Most of the semi-rugged business laptops are not well equipped to handle multimedia tasks, but the E6430 does. It has completed Handbrake in 1 minute 25 seconds and Photoshop CS5 in 3 minutes 15 seconds, faster than HP 8460p (1 minute 46 seconds in Handbrake, 4 minutes 22 seconds in Photoshop). E6430 is not good in graphics render, where it is defeated by the system with discrete graphics processor, such as HP 8460p and Panasonic CF-31.

We are most impressed with the battery life of Dell, which supports the stiffness of the system with long endurance. Using giant 9 cell, 97Wh battery, Latitude E6430 lasts 10 hours 11 minutes in MobileMark 2007 test. When we compare, Panasonic Toughbook CF-S10 and Dell Latitude E6420 last 9 hours 07 minutes and 8 hours and 46 minutes in turn. For anyone looking for a combination of durability and long battery, E6430 is the best thing we've ever seen.

From the iron case to all-day battery life, Dell Latitude E6430 is the best laptop you can buy to have a business laptop. Even compared to other semi-rugged laptop, it is superior in terms of performance, reliability and battery life. Its powerful design may be too expensive to use at the office, but it is the smart choice for anyone who has seen what happens to a normal laptop because of common environmental risks.
