The latest version of Windows didn’t just
bring a fresh new look for desktop PCs, laptops and tablets; Microsoft also
released its new version of Windows Phone, heralding a host of new handsets,
the first of which is the stylish Nokia Lumia 920.
Nokia
Lumia 920
The Lumia 920 is the largest smartphone in
Nokia’s new range, packing a 4.5-inch super AMOLED display protected by
Corning’s famous and virtually indestructible Gorilla Glass. The super-bright
display ensures luxurious, deep colours, and the huge screen size makes web
browsing and video viewing easy. That 4.5-inch display also makes the Lumia 920
a seriously big handset, which won’t suit everyone’s tastes. The phone is 11mm
thick with soft, rounded plastic edges, and weights 186g, which is a substantial
bulk compared to some modern smartphones, but no bigger than similarly-sized
competitors.
Although this handset is pocket-bustingly
big, the upshot is a premium feel and display that match any of its
competitors. Style is a big part of the Windows Phone experience, and the Lumia
920 certainly doesn’t disappoint. The new phone comes in a choice of red,
yellow, white and black, and accessories such as headphones, wireless charging
stations and speakers are available in matching hues. The new mobile operating
system is designed to be as stylish as it is slick, and this has spurred on
phone manufacturers to craft their Windows handsets in a similar vein.
The Lumia 920 comes with 32GB of storage,
which will be plenty for most users, but it can’t be expanded using, microSD,
which means you’re stuck with that allocation. However, Microsoft’s cloud
storage service SkyDrive gives you can extra 7GB free when you sign up.
Photography is a huge part of the Lumia
920’s design, and it’s equipped with a brilliant 8MP camera aided capably by a
Carl Zeiss lens. The result is one of the best photography experiences you’ll
get from any smartphone on the market, and genuinely means you don’t need to
carry a compact digital camera. The photos from our series of tests were consistently
sharp, and the image stabilisation and excellent quality sensor meant that even
with an unsteady hand, gloomy scenes were well reproduced without the use of a
flash.
Unplugged
Our sample handset came with a wireless
charging station, which is an optional accessory, but so good that we implore
anyone to try it. Just place the Lumia on top of the oval-shaped plastic device
and watch the phone juice up. It’s really convenient, and not having to fiddle
about with connectors every time you want to power it up makes a refreshing
change.
The Nokia Lumia 920 is a well-built and
luxurious handset that’s great to use, and is packed with unique apps and
features. For everyday use we still prefer the slightly trimmer build of the
slender HTC 8X, its main rival, but in terms of photographic performance and
quality of the screen, the Lumia 920 a ideal for anyone looking for a premium
quality Windows smartphone.
