Sony Xperia ion - A Big Slice Of Smartphone

3/16/2013 11:39:42 AM

Riding the supersized smartphone trend, Sony’s ion squeezes Android 4.0 ICS and a dual-core brain into a shell that's big, bold, and dressed sharp for the occasion...

The ion rocks a stupendous 12MP camera, similar to the one we've seen on the Xperia S. Shots are crisp and naturally colored and the phone will go from standby to capture in just 1.5s. Video is similarly excellent, with fantastic shake removal.

A 1.5GHz dual-core processor on the ion does feel like too little too late. After all, for similar money, you could get your hands on quad- core devices. A little jerkiness creeps in occasionally - especially when changing orientation or navigating the web.

Combine the ion’s genuine HD resolution of 1280x720 with its 4.55in screen and Sony's picture processing tech, and you end up with a movie-watching experience other phones just can't match. At 323ppi, it'll satisfy even the most beady-eyed user.

This is a big slice of smartphone, and although it's undeniably swish, not everyone is sold on the touch- sensitive controls on the front. Since no backlight has been provided, you’ll have to memorize their positions for use in the dark.

The Galaxy S III offers the slickest Android ICS experience we’ve seen, thanks to its 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos processor that eats 1080p vids for breakfast. Extras such as expandable memory and a huge battery make it the ultimate supersized droid.
