The single LED flash fulfills the task of lighting the scene; however, you can get results of image that look more natural without using it, although the 28mm equivalent focal length of the lens is not the greatest for portrait images.

Detail is fairly good in the shots, though they were taken with strong sharpening. Some purple fringing is able to be seen in the photo of the trees above, however, most of the photos are not much matter in general. Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) which means we can capture the sharp handheld shots at 1/15 seconds or less without using the LED. Exposure is generally fine, and can be set by using the touchscreen. The HDR shooting mode gets the impressive results with high contrast images, even though it may look unnatural.

ISO image noise level

ISO test photos

ISO test photos

ISO noise at lower ISO settings is good, but the lower light levels and increased ISO settings, noise becomes quite clear. The pictures at ISO 800 and ISO 1,600 indicate that there is no increased noise compared to the previous images, and since the shutter speed and aperture remain the same, we doubt that the camera has not really made the switch to the higher ISO settings. For examples of noise in low light, look at the examples of the other pictures above.

Efficient white balance

White Balance Performance - Auto White Balance (AWB) works well under the yellow light, which gives the slightly warm result of the image, and the tungsten preset offers a more neutral result. AWB works very well under fluorescent light with the presets getting a similar result.

Panorama mode

The panorama mode automatically combines the images together while you are panning the camera around. The images are linked to each other quite well, but in some locations, the exposure changes may be seen.

15 effects are integrated into the HTC camera app and are selected along the bottom of the screen. You are able to adjust the exposure, contrast, saturation, and sharpness of the images. The "Zoe" shooting mode captures multiple continuous images (up to 20) and then places them into a video, the video mode will make a short video clip and does not accompany with sound, but you can still store these photos.

Video

Video options consist of slow-motion mode, fast HD (60fps), video HDR (Full HD).

Value

The HTC One is available on the market at a price of approximate $793.5 for products that are not included Sims; and is higher than a number of new smartphones that emphasize on camera quality including the iPhone 5 (8mp), Sony Xperia Z (13mp), Samsung Galaxy S4 (13mp), Nokia Lumia 920 (8mp with OIS), and Nokia PureView 808 (41MP, Xenon flash).

Conclusion

Beyond its rivals, the HTC One has taken the bold step by using a sensor with lower resolution (4MP), and thus larger pixels than rival smartphones, combined with a bright f/2.0 lens and optical image stabilization, which will bring the great advantages in low-light conditions. However, this does not significantly affect the level of detail that the camera is likely to capture, with 4 megapixels giving the feeling of slightly lower resolution these days, with compact cameras featuring the parameters from 12 to 16 megapixels, digital SLR cameras are 16 to 24 megapixels+, and other smart phones are 8 or 13 megapixels.

Another camera that has employed sensor technology to improve low light performance is the Nokia PureView 808, with a large sensor and 41 megapixels, it uses pixel moving/merging to offer better low-light performance, and comes with a real Xenon flash, so you can take photos at lower resolution (5-8mp optimum) with lower noise and glare outside, you are also able to capture ultra-high resolution images with detail and low light performance. Another camera is designed to create low-light performance is the Nokia Lumia 920 with optical image stabilization and an 8mp sensor.

However, neither of these cameras uses Android, and if you would like to get the latest applications and a great web experience with good connectivity and sharing, then your choices will return to Android and iPhone. If you frequently take pictures, or want to shoot images in low light conditions, and want to share directly to social media sites such as Facebook, the low resolution of 4 megapixels cannot make you worry too much, making the HTC become a great choice. It looks and feels like a high-end smart phone and having good quality, although the images are not too appealing.

For the photographers who prefer low light, the phone's camera will make an impression, but with good light, the low resolution, the camera may disappoint. The HDR images and videos are greatly impressive, as well as the high-speed shooting. With a smart phone, the HTC One is simply shining.
