Despite intense competition from the likes of Samsung and Amazon as well as countless copycats. Apple has managed to retain its numero uno position in the tablet market.

This is coming from a report released by market intelligence firm ABI. Should this surprise anyone? They are the hottest and most prolific gadget maker in the world and, despite an ongoing recession, there are still millions of people clamoring for their products.

During the first quarter of 2012, nearly 18.2 million tablets were shipped worldwide, out of which Apple had the lion’s share of 11.8 million iPads sold. This is why their factory in China is going all out to keep up with demand. The demand for the iPad 3 is at an all-time high despite the fact that the iPad 2 and iPad 1 are available at much lower prices in worldwide markets.

However, analysts are of the opinion that Apple’s strategy of selling earlier versions of the iPad at lower prices has worked in the company’s favor and keeps the bottom – line healthy and strong. Investors know all about this. It also helps keep financially strapped customers from choosing a cheaper competitor. An iPad 1 or 2 is better than nothing and apparently it is better than the best product that other companies have to offer, such as the Samsung and Amazon tablets.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which was considered a serious competitor to the iPad has fizzled out and has slipped to third. Overtaking the Kindle Fire, Samsung’s tablet managed to nab second place. Unlike Apple and Amazon, Samsung offers a battery of tablet to its customers worldwide.
