You must be wondering why we are testing out
walkie talkies of all things.
Actually we are always looking into new
technologies out there. This month, we present to you the S1LK TRBO. It is one
of a kind, and still packs a bucket load of features that will appeal to many
segments of the markets.

1. Smallest Sets
First of all, I want to give a big clap to
Motorola for managing to shrink what used to be a bulky piece of machine to
something you can bring around a location to call on your colleagues on the
same network. The new TRBO walkie talkies are not like your father's
communication device. As you can see, it looks like a phone. Motorola designed
it specifically to look this way as it is unobtrusive as a standard walkie
talkie, and will be discreet in situations that need the not-to-be-seen contact
devices. Examples include the front desk of a hotel, the security detail for
VIPs and so on.

2. Easy To Use
The device itself is as big as a midrange
smart phone you can get today, but has the look and feel of a feature phone. It
has a 9-key keypad, a power button, home/back button,function keys and a menu
button in the middle. It also has the industry largest LCD screen on a walkie
talkie - a full colur, 5 line display for status and messages. Yes, messages -
but we will get to there soon. On the side, there is the Push-to- talk (PTT)
button, volume toggle and a third function key.

3. Long Range
The range of this unit (needs to be in a
pair) is about two kilometres in a straight line. Realistically, you can use it
within a building and outside with no signal degradation. That small antenna can
still work as good as those longer ones you are accustomed to. We tested the
device, and we managed to reach almost one kilometre through buildings.
Impressive. Also the TRBO is dust- and water- resistant. You can also send
messages between units in lieu of voice communication - passing an affirmative
acknowledgement for example.
4. Data On Board
Something different about this walkie
talkie is the first introduction of data connection in their device. What this
means is that you can now pair the TRBO to any Bluetooth device, and you can
use it like as you would with your phone. Only difference is that since a
walkie talkie is a suplex system, as in voice goes one way, so every time you
talk, you need to press the PTT button.
