It’s interesting to watch where LaCie brings their product at the time when Seagate took over the company. Our advice is not to misbehave with Rugged’s hard drive and USB drive series. LaCie Rugged Hard Disk is still a must-have one for extremists, but now RuggedKey allows you to take data to anywhere and keep it safe without an enclosure’s bulkiness.

Clearly, LaCie combined its two best products, borrowed the beautiful orange coat from Rugged hard drive series, and the USB which looks similar to IamaKey series was neglected. This USB device is trendy and compact enough to hang with car keys plus the rubber coat can stand again dust, temperature, coldness as well as fall from 100 meter height.

RuggedKey features 32GB (we did test the 16GB version), which was not much in accordance to the cost you have to pay. Transfer rate was slightly enhanced. Read and write speed (USB 3.0) were 138MBps and 35MBps respectively. Besides, Mac devices having USB 2.0 connectors are becoming obsoleted and stuck with read/write speed of 26MBps/17MBps.

RuggedKey can be protected by password with 256bit AES encryption. And it comes with 5 Wuala cloud secure apps, enabling you to copy content into each or double drive storage although usually you need to enter the Internet to gain access to these files. Of course, you don’t really need these services as Disk Utility and Dropbox offer similar back-ups and encryption. But Wuala can be useful in case the drive is used with different PCs.

Key points

If you want a loyal drive which is durable and able to carry a millions of studies to anywhere you go, it’s recommended to invest in LaCi’s Rugged drive and defrag it with a NTFS driver to make it available for Windows PCs. But, if you just need a multi-based USB drive that is easily carried along and able to stand harsh weather, LaCie RuggedKey appears value for money.
