Towards the end of 2011, Bose introduced
the SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speakers, targeted at those who use smartphones
as their primary music source. A year or so later, Bose saw fit to refresh the
product, which is now calLED the SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II.
Same
speaker, better sound: The SoundLink Mobile II in an incremental improvement
over the original.
The dimensions of the new model match up
exactly with the older, and not much has changed in terms of aesthetics except
for the redesigned front cover. While the original came with a solid single-piece
nylon flap, the new cover features a bi-fold design. This also lets the cover
double up as a handy stand for the speakers wherever you go.

Bose’s dual opposing passive radiator
design enclosed in waffle cone surrounds are still retained for the SoundLink
II, but the speakers have been upgraded - now with new neodymium transducers as
well as an updated digital signal processing algorithm. Bose claims that the additions
help out across the full range of the audio spectrum.

SoundLink Bluetooth Mobile Speaker II – back view
Testing the SoundLink II reveals some
improvements in performance. Strong mids and bright highs still remain the
dominating feature of the product. However, the new SoundLink does deliver a
marginally better overall mix of audio. Mids for these speakers no longer
overpower the sound as severely as its predecessor did. While previously
Buckethead’s “Sail On Soothsayer” was marred by loose distortion guitar, the
new SoundLink II tackLED the same tune and rendered the same parts with a bit
more definition.

The original Bose SoundLink was already one
of the better portable wireless speakers on the market in its day. Seeing that
the new SoundLink II is cheaper, while improving on performance slightly,
consumers actually get greater value for their outlay. It’s a great buy for any
type of music junkie.
