Dell's ultra-wide screen offers
outstanding picture quality and 21:9 aspect ratios
While most of the wide-angle screens follow
the standard 16:9 aspect ratio, the Dell UltraSharp U2913WM is the first
monitor that we find in 21:9 formats.
It uses IPS screen with anti-glare matte
coating, and creates imposing figure on the desk. It is not higher or deeper
than those ordinary 23-inch wide-angle screens, but it's almost 7 inches wider,
giving it 29 inches diagonal and a natural resolution of 2560x1080.

Ultrasharp U2913WM
Initially, the ultra-wide aspect ratio of
U2913WM causes confused. With a useful height which is on par with a Full HD
screen, horizontal resolution of 2560 horizontal pixels makes the Windows
desktop appears to be strange phenomenon letterbox. But soon it feels like to
have two 1280x1024 monitors sit side by side, with a plus is there's no bezel
to divide the desktop in half.
The screen's width allows you to stretch
one browser window along with one large Word document, or use the Windows Snap
feature to quickly separate screen for efficient multitasking.
For the entertainment, Dell's off-center
ratio might be good, might be bad. Those games like Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2
look fantastic, with ultra-wide resolution brings a cinema experience. The
screen shape is also perfect for wide-angle movie that was filmed in 2.33:1
format: there's no black bar on the 16:9 screen, the action stretches from one
corner to the other corner. However, with those videos that were recorded in
4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, its complement width is wasted, with noticeable broad
black bars at the edges of the screen.
The image quality is excellent. In the
default setting, U2913WM reaches maximum brightness at 349cd/m2, with a sample
contrast ratio of 1.170:1. The default configuration is probably slightly
warmer than ideal - we recorded a color temperature of 5920K. However, the
overall color accuracy was excellent, with an average Delta E was only 2.1.
SRGB mode was self-calibrated by Dell
further improves things. Although the maximum brightness and contrast ratio
slightly drops - to 325cd/m2 and 1.084:1 - color temperature rises up to 6222K,
which is close to the ideal 6500K, and the average Delta E index drops to 1.1.
