Nikon 1 J3 - The Shortest Shutter Lag And The World's Fastest Continuous Shooting (Part 1)

Nikon announced that Nikon 1 J3 has the shortest shutter lag and the world's fastest continuous shooting.

Nikon 1 J3 was released in January 2013 with the S1 and is a compact mirror-less system with extremely small camera body, fast continuous shooting and less shutter lag. It has a 10-30mm lens in silver, red, white, black and beige for $485.

Features

Nikon 1 J3 has a 14.2 megapixel CMOS sensor to provide fast and accurate AF and ISO up to 6,400. It can also capture up to 15 fps with autofocus and 60fps with focus on a fixed point.

J3 offers some unique features that you will find on Nikon cameras. Live Image Control allows you to see the impact of changing to exposure settings in real time and Slow View takes to 20 consecutive images and displays them as slow motion, you can then select the exact moment you want to shoot. Smart Photo Selector will take many pictures and will save 5 best photos-based algorithms, use information such as glance in portrait to determine the best picture. Motion Snapshot takes slow shooting just before you hit the shot. There is also Creative Mode shooting mode as well as PSAM. You can also shoot panoramic by scan method.

Video is recorded in full 1080p HD and you can take photos full resolution 3:2 during recording. There is a Movie Mode Advanced mode to convert smooth autofocus and you can also use PSAM control to set the shutter speed and aperture, as well as record slow motion film.

If you've ever owned any Nikkor lenses you can buy FT1 lens mount adapter to use them on the J3, if they are AF-S Nikkor lenses you can still use autofocus, the other lenses are only manual focus. To transfer images to your phone or tablet we have Wireless Mobile Adapter WU-1b, can also buy separately. There is also a GR-N2100 Grip and a WP-N2 waterproof case.

Handling

Nikon 1 J3 has a very compact aluminum camera body. It's not small enough to carry in a pocket, but small camera pocket, Amica Manfrotto 10 is good enough. 10-30mm lens has a rubberized ring around the lens to aid grip and the lens can become compact when no use. There is a button to open and lock it, when released the camera will turn on, when compacted back, it will turn off.

J3 has a menu button on the top, along the power button, shutter button and the movie record button. On the back are the playback button, menu and delete and rotating wheel to flip menu. Rotating wheel can also be used as a navigation bar allows to access the self-timer, continuous shooting, flash, and exposure compensation and feature button, they allow to access to different settings based on the mode you're using. On the left side of the camera is a button to release the flash.

The 3in screen has a good colors 921k resolution and so bright when viewed in the light variety. J3 has better layout menu that makes navigation easily, although instead of using the menu button, PSAM modes are accessed by using creative mode via the function button.

Battery life is rated at 220 photos according to CIPA test results, quite short, so you may want to consider buying a spare battery. We took some photos to test the response of the camera, from the opening of the first photo, turn over each one in turn, focus speed, etc.... We have some photos and then use average to ensure the accuracy and consistency, make it easy to compare with other cameras.

·         Continuous Shooting - 5 fps (JPEG / RAW): 5.5 / 5.3 fps

·         Continuous Shooting - 15 fps (JPEG / RAW): 15 / 14.4 fps

·         Continuous Shooting - 30 fps (JPEG / RAW): 28.3 / 30 fps

·         Continuous Shooting - 60 fps (JPEG / RAW): 67.2 / 65 fps

​​Continuous shooting speed is quite similar whether shooting in JPEG or RAW, with all maximum resolution shooting mode.
