Seriously nice build quality is ultimately
let down by the screen.
Toshiba’s Satellite P850 is a seriously
smart-looking laptop.

One of Intel’s quad-core CPUs partners with
8GB of RAM, a hybrid 750GB hard drive provides ample storage, and a Blu-ray
reader makes the cut too. It’s a combination of hardware that places the
Toshiba among the front-runners for performance, scoring 0.96 in our Real World
Benchmarks.
The modest GeForce GT 630M graphics chipset
drags it down the gaming rankings, however, and the display delivers another
blow. The 1366 x 768 resolution is stingy compared to the Full HD resolutions
packed by some of the competition, and the panel’s image quality squanders the
Blu-ray drive’s potential: a mediocre 165:1 contrast ratio delivers weak,
washed-out images.
The
keyboard is fine, but the Satellite P850’s touchpad severely dents its appeal.
Ergonomics seal the Toshiba’s fate. The
keyboard is fine, but the Satellite P850’s touchpad severely dents its appeal.
The whole pad clicks downwards noisily and feels clunky. The combination of an
over-sensitive touch surface and the occasional tendency for the cursor to
bounce out of position prove aggravating.
At this price, we expect better. With its
rivals trading metal-clad looks for much better displays and graphics
performance, the Satellite P850 needs a rethink.
